Farkles for the new RT

Almost as much fun as shopping for a new bike is finding all the farkles to load onto once you have it in the garage! The bike already came with Ilium front crash bars, BMW cylinder covers, BMW aux lights and mounts, BMW Nav V, and an Akro exhaust.

I'm adding/added:

BMW tank bag
Ilium side stand foot enlarger
Ilium rear crash bars (thanks mt65804!)
Mirror clamp RAM ball (thanks MHTOUR!)
GIVI V56 top box and mounting plate
BMW audio/iPod cable - for my tunes, dude!

I'll still be rocking the SENA SMH-10 and the SENA Prism Tube.

I think that's about enough for now.

Thanks for that, Jeff - now I have to get some Clearwaters! I had a pair of Darlas on my last RT - really liked them, but those giant Ericas look the bee's knees! Wallet be damned!

Well, it's really never enough, is it....

I've got a set of HyperLights on order as well as a WERKS Quiet Ride at the standard 24" height on the way. Now, I think I'm done....... famous last words.

Re: Farkles for the new RT

You need Bar Risers!
Just finished my installations the AM.
I found this solution on the Facebook RT Site

The engineer is a Cal Berkeley grad and teaches at their entrepreneur school with in the engineering department. He co-designed the USB function and got in early to AI & gaming.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/R1200RT-R12...72.m2749.l2649

IF YOU DECIDE TO GET THIS KIT: BE SURE YOU REMOVE THE PAINT COATING ON THE BARS. THE TOLERANCES ARE VERY TIGHT ON THE NEW MACHININGS AND ONE DID NOT REQUIRE REMOVAL THE LEFT SIDE DID. I didn't sleep well last night trying to figure a way to remove the partially inserted handle bar that had become jammed. Sleep did solve the problem in the AM!

Installation instructions:

Rental Kit https://www.ebay.com/itm/R1200-R1250...5081020?hash=h

I also got his mirror set . . . CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE!

I would definitely add headlight protector. Just added an Aeroflow yesterday. Mine was starting to get a small amount of pitting and I wish I would have put it on right away when I bought the bike.

I didn't know about this issue until it really was too late. You don't notice it because the headlight is only on when the bike runs so it's easy to miss it. It's pitted so bad now I'm praying for a good size rock chip to finish it off bigtime so I can replace it with a new one...and get a dang protector for it! Wish the dealer would have suggested it but the didn't.

I've been on the fence about headlight guards. I understand the reason behind it, but I've never had headlight guards on any cars or bikes I've owned over the years and I've never had a blown out headlight. So, just how common is this a problem on the RTs? I'll run down to the garage and check out my 2015 which had 34k miles on it when I bought it. With my last RT, I had no issues with the headlights being smashed out in the 45k miles I had on it.

Is it simply a case of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?

Of course, i'm always looking for a reason to farkle up the bike a bit more, so there's that too.....

Yes, "... an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Put one on your RT and hope it never saves your headlight. Don't put it on and hope you will never have needed it.

Re: Farkles for the new RT

For my car, I wouldn't put a HL protector on. There are usually enough salvage parts around on EBay since a lot of my cars are sold.

The RT, not so much. What is the HL assembly cost? Something like $800? For me, it was worth putting the Cee Bailey on. As a matter of fact, I did it twice! (2 - RT household)

I installed LaminX yellow covers on 2.5” PIAAs and Clearwater yellow slip on’s on my 4” lights. They are now better protected from potential debris strikes and the resulting advantage offered by the yellow color..

I am ASSUMING a protector would prevent or greatly diminish this effect which is what my '16 RT's headlight lens looked like after 10 or 12K miles. What's odd is that if I look at it with magnifier it appears to be on the inside of the lens! What is weird is my car doesn't seem nearly that bad at 115K miles.

Here it is at about 10 or 12K miles--it's much worse today at 38K miles so this is an old photo:

This is why I say I'm hoping for a flying rock to break it outright then I can file a claim under the comprehensive component of my insurance which only has a $50 deductible per claim. Right after that...I will install a good protector! Fortunately, I don't have to look at it.

Re: Farkles for the new RT

I never had a headlight protector on my RT until I was away on a tour and another chap had a stone through his headlight, which in the UK is an MOT failure, it cost him circa £800 to replace. So when I got back I fitted a cover. Two months later the cover got destroyed one night by a stone. Now whether that would have cracked my headlight if I didn't have a cover, I don't know, but I replaced the cover and now its fitted to my 1250. But I've never had a headlight crack on any bike in over 45 years of riding, so I would say its a rare occurrence.

I found this solution on the Facebook RT Site

The engineer is a Cal Berkeley grad and teaches at their entrepreneur school with in the engineering department. He co-designed the USB function and got in early to AI & gaming.

I also got his mirror set . . . CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE!

I also got the risers and the mirrors for my 1250rt. I’m happy with both. I live in the Bay Area so I had Jack do the install at his location.

Re: Farkles for the new RT

This thread is super helpful for a guy who just got his RT. Not so helpful for the wallet...
