TPM 2016 R1200RTW

I think I am experiencing a TPM failure. My front and rear display light up after a block plus of riding. 36 - 44 . Riding a few miles the rear display goes blank. About 10 miles along it comes back. Twice the display was ------- long enough to trigger the warning triangle and tire on monitor. Some time later the sensor is detected and warnings clear. Today I had the warning triggered and 8 miles later clear and display pressure 44. Today I lost the display 4 times but restored . I have lost the front display only twice but think it must be on its way out.
Is this the symptom of a dying battery in the sensor .
The bike is still under warranty and hope to convince the dealer to replace both TPM's if that is the problem.

So warranty won't cover battery replacement and the warranty won't cover diagnostics unless a fault is returned. Best bet is to find someone nearby who has one of them GS911 thingamabobs.

The rear TPM went bad on my 2014 RT. Aftermarket warranty covered the replacement Talk to the dealer. It should show a fault code and should be replaced under the bikes warranty.

My rear sensor is going bad. They are around $250 each. I plan on replacing it when I get my tires replaced.

Interesting that you folks are showing failures within a couple of years. The TPMs on my 2009 seem to be doing fine ten years in. I do not ever recall seeing a fault on the GS911, which I hook up every 6K service.

Regardless, this is unacceptable performance and is a warranty item. Take it in to the dealer. (McW, local info - SJBMW has always worked well with me on warranty and recall issues.)

I agree with JayJay; take it to the dealer and let them sort it out for you. Most TPM batteries last about 10years. My 2010 Lexus 450h is still on the original TPM batteries; two years is not acceptable performance.

I plan to take it to the dealer. I am waiting a bit to see if the front starts to fail more often. I will pick a dry day to this. Will the warning fault store a code so they can see it? Or will it clear itself when the sensor receiver reconnect?

Jeff, what you describe is very similar to what I experienced when I had two new Conti RA3 tires installed at around 30K miles. Immediately after installation BOTH the front and rear failed to display for many miles of riding which was a first--they always lit up before getting to the end of my short street. The tires were installed the day before we took off for a trip up to the Canadian Rockies. They continued to perform erratically, including getting a couple of low pressure warnings. After several thousand miles it seemed they seemed to be working regularly again. My warranty expired a week after returning home, and at that point both sensors had been working consistently for many days. Of note, I got a flat in the rear tire a month or two later, and a new Conti RA3 was installed. No problems w/ the TPM after! So it's still working, and why it suffered after the prior tire install is pure conjecture!

This sounds exactly like what my ‘15 RT did starting in Nov 2017. Bike went into service in Aug 2015. Intermittent loss of signal from the rear TPMS. I connected my GS911 and it showed numerous episodes of interference. Talked to my dealer and he said that is a common fault. Faults became more numerous and in Jan 2018, at 34500 miles, dealer agreed to replace the rear sensor. Problem solved. In June the front began displaying the same symptoms. I sourced a sensor from the internet for $78.00 and installed it myself. Again, problem solved. The sensors are reputed to have 5+ year lifespans. Some do I suppose but a lot do not.

The TPM units only come in when the bike is moving...this is why you ride a couple blocks before getting a reading...I think battery life may be a bit controlled by time..years..but more so by milage..I got about 75K outta mine before I started to strange behavior...3 years

Not specifically. It was on Ebay. I tried a cheaper one before which worked well but only for a couple months. The last one said it had the 7 digit ID number printed on it making it very easy to register to the bike with a GS911.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think your 2016 model uses the same sensors as my 2012 model, even though they are a different generation. GS-911 does not show voltage as far as I've seen, but you can use it to register a second pair of sensors if you choose. So, new sensors are both registered and "activated" with a tool to wake them up. The batteries are common watch batteries, but sealed in epoxy. if your dealer won't replace them, you can install knock-off sensors pretty cheaply. Here's my video on how I did it:

It depends on how much you use it. They are in standby mode using very little power when not in use. Use it very little and it will last forever. Use it a lot and it will not last so long.
My '14 rear lost signal yesterday for a short time yesterday and while it is just over 4 years old it has done over 100,000km so was expecting them to cut out sooner or later. NZ$204 for a new one so next time I change tires I will change the TPMS and should be set for another 4 years.

Got a tire symbol on the dash and switched to the pressure reading and the back was -- and the tire was showing red. Thought I had a problem but the tire is fine. 2015 with 20k. Unfortunately, the local dealer has a very understaffed service dept and any service appointment is a month out. Going to purchase the gs911 to see what's up and hopefully just turn off the tire symbol for now. Sound like a sensor problem or a dead battery?

Sounds like a dead or dying battery which is a sensor problem as the battery is not easily replaceable. I have not shopped them recently but I bought one lfor $78.00 from an E-bay vendor last June that is still working fine.

My 2014RT has gone through three sets of the TPW things.

It is VERY disconcerting to have that red and yellow warning come on in the middle of the night.

No problems with the tires, just the indications that the end of the world was about to show up. What a pain.

They were originally replaced under warranty and the last set was covered under an extended warranty.

It would be nice to just be able to turn off the indication after a failure.

I am sorry I did not update my original post. I took the bike in for evaluation. They read a fault in front sensor. They replaced the sensor under warranty. I rode away and within 5 miles had the rear drop out again. I took it back and was told since the fault was not showing on the rear and was on the front, that is why they replaced the front. Rear replaced all is well. Funny my original complaint was for the rear wheel.

Mine faltered (https://www.bmwlt.com/forums/rt-seri...ml#post1894995) about this time last year, both front and back, but after a month or so of not working consistently they've been working fine despite the cool temps here. Nothing like the inside of a tire to provide some heat

The front sensor on my 2015 has not worked at all for 6 months (about 5,000 mi) I have a new one ready to go in next tire change. This is completely unacceptable and pretty unheard of in other cars/bikes. I'm hopeful that a forced recall will eventually put the money back in my pocket (save those receipts) but the hassle factor is irreparable.

Mine starting going bad at about 70K miles...they only transmit info when rolling....that's why they take a minute or so to work....so age shouldn't really have much impact on the life of the tpm....2014 RT

My rear sensor started not showing pressure when I would check it last fall. Then, in the middle of freeway traffic in Los Angeles, it came up with the red alert that a tire was low. I didn't feel anything, but fought to get off the road. Only to find everything was fine. Just got back from a trip into North Carolina. It started sending the red alert again and done it multiple times.

I have two aftermarket replacement TPS modules ordered. I ordered the "wake up device". I also ordered a pack of the CR 2032 batteries. First attempt will be to inspect sensor in rear for damage ( in case I hurt it changing tires ). If good I will attempt a battery change. I have a GS 911 so I can install and activate the aftermarket sensor if I have to go that route. Don't need a front tire, so won't take that down to install a battery this time.

While I appreciate the onboard TPS and the fact it can warn against a low tire, I do NOT appreciate the anxiety this system has given me. No way to turn it off, so I have to get it back in proper operating condition.

After reading this post I decided to check mine and discovered that I've had a couple of "reception interference" faults which (luckily) healed themselves; 2014 RT.

I am having the exact same problem on my 15' RT with 18k miles. Unfortunately it is out of warranty and was quoted $235 just for the sensor. It started out showing the ----- on the rear tire display every now and then but never got to the point of showing the two warning signs. Now after a few months of riding, it has got to the point where it only reads the rear sensor during the first few miles of riding that day and never shows up again unless I let it sit for several hours. So I guess that is a symptom of a dying battery. With only 18k miles, I guess it's more time based than mile since some people are hitting over 70k miles.

I had it at the dealer for maintenance and they checked the tpms with the diag tool and it did not show any fault codes or interference. They said that the sensors are reading just fine. Even though I had a warning light of on the dash with a red rear tire and a reading of -----, I thought that would have generated some type of fault code. I guess I was hoping it was an easy inexpensive fix. Guess I'll change it out on next tire change.

My '15 RT was one of the very first one to land here, and so it's been ridden since late 2014, and everything (in particular, the TPM) is still working as it should.

I think you have to factor in miles as well since the batteries do not recharge per se, at least from an outside source. So one that is 5y/o and has only 14K miles on the bike may still well work dandy for another year or two. I have read tales of 6+y/o life for some.

Well if the wheels aren't turning the batteries are sleeping, or supposed to be.

This is another where battery life is all over the place and I have seen no data of miles ridden on active TPS and time battery's lasted in years in relation to miles ridden and time/miles sitting.

I know at the very least they should be battery replaceable. Not having to cutting it out and trying to replace it but a user accessible cover. And I mean a un removable cover like on our key fobs

Ok, then, here's another data point. Sold my 2007 RT sometimes in 2014, with original TPM working quite fine, and about 40k miles on the clock. BTW, the '15 RT has about 24k miles on the clock. Would have been a lot higher if I hadn't been riding abroad.
