Question RT LC headlight assembly removal

After researching various threads about installing LED lamps, I'm ready to take the plunge. I have an '18 RT LC. Having replaced more than my share of hexhead RT lamps on my and riding buddy's bikes, I'd like to remove the headlight assemble and preserve the skin on my fingertips and forearms. I can't seem to find any instructions in the various threads or on YouTube. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: RT LC headlight assembly removal

Iíve done it myself to replace all three headlamp bulbs. I donít have instructions for you other than to start by taking the side panels off and going from there. Once you get the speakers out and all of the plastic off, there are retaining clips that hold the headlamp into grommets. This is definitely the easiest way to replace the bulbs.

One whole weekend. That includes me taking my time, Church, going out to eat and numerous gin and tonics.

Re: RT LC headlight assembly removal

A whole weekend? Crap. Maybe I'll just find a 7 year old kid with good garage skills and have him do it the old fashioned way.
Thanks to aquajoe...the photo is very helpful. I will carefully reconsider my lighting needs.

In looking at the picture, it seems that there is a round cover with a tab on it directly in the center of the bike. Can't you remove that cover and access the low beam? --Steve

Here you go... I made it so the steps are linked from the Main Page and added a button to return to the Main Page. This is for the Base US Model with Audio System.

UPDATE: If opening in a browser it'll look funny, so download Acrobat if you haven't already.

Those who say that it can't be done shouldn't interrupt those who are doing it.

Glad to have helped; what LEDs did you use? There was a post by some butthole spelunker who's link to the LEDs he installed was no longer valid.

Re: RT LC headlight assembly removal

I'm ashamed to say I haven't tackled this yet. I will do my own 12K service this coming week with the assistance of Boxflyer's YouTube videos and shop assist for keeping the screws in order. If that goes well, I may tackle the headlight project later with more confidence.

I personally think his method of screw-keeping was a little much; I simply use masking tape to keep the screw in its proper location.

The 12K service is easier than you might think. Just make sure you have a good torque wrench and feeler gauges.

Yesterday a friend of mine backed his bike into mine and put a gouge into the painted piece next to the headlight (part 5 on in the pic) on the right side of the bike. I can either get it repaired, or replace it with a factory pre-painted part ($289.99). Either way, I'll have to remove it.

I don't see anything about that part in the R1200RTLC panels screw locations.pdf file that you had. Do you have a file that includes those panels as well??

I know I'm going to need to take up the speakers to get up in there, but I fear that I'll have to take out much more as well.

How bad is the gouge? Could you fill it and paint it with some touch-up paint?

Ah, I see the other document now, thanks.

I ride my bike often (my default form of transport), but I also keep it clean and shiny. I want the scratch to be undetectable, so the only solutions are to have a professional paint it, or replace it with a new factory painted panel. I installed an 11 piece striping kit back in January and 2 of those stripes will have to be replaced as well.

I would suspect if the gouge is that deep, then the repair of the current part would probably match/exceed just buying a new part, unless you can do it yourself.

Re: RT LC headlight assembly removal

Somewhere around here is a good picture of the back of the low beam headlight. Mine blew last weekend (3 low beams in 12k miles) and just by feel and looking at the picture; and a little Theater of the Mind" it only took me 40 minutes. The picutre really helped because i could see what I needed to do.
