Going to The Sun Road, Glacier NP OPEN !

At 0915 this morning we opened the road for the full 52 mile trip through the park over the Continental Divide.

Come enjoy one of the most scenic roads in the US, and a great ride for bikes.

A little construction will delay folks a few minutes during the day, but usually less than 15 -20, in a 2.5 to 3 mile section. It is gravel, but well compacted, and they run a water truck routinely to keep the dust down.

See you in Glacier, " The Crown of the Continent"

Re: Going to The Sun Road, Glacier NP OPEN !

Hi Gary,

We are planning on riding the Going to the Sun road tomorrow with another couple. Any updates on the road and/or traffic before we leave Calgary tomorrow morning? We will be riding the Blue 2007 LT and our friends are on a Black 2003 wing. Hope we get a chance to say hi.

Rode it today (Sunday): traffic was light, the one delay at the one-way was about 20 minutes; the compacted gravel was tolerable--my SO did not panic.

Sorry Ken that I didn't see your update request in time!

Barring any 'major weather events' the road will be open until about Sept. 15. 20 -30 minutes delays between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM, up to four hours delays between 10PM and 6 AM (but who is riding that late over the mountains anyway?)

Have fun and look me up....

Re: Going to The Sun Road, Glacier NP OPEN !

Hi Gary,

Sorry we did not get a chance to look you up. We went through on Friday afternoon around 2:30. An amazing ride, the gravel section was very short and no problem at all. We were lucky as the traffic was quite lite so no major delays. For those folks who have not had the opporunity to ride that route make it a MUST DO you won't be sorry.

We looked for your expedition but did not see it. Maybe next time we are heading that way we can hook up for a ride or coffee.

Sorry we couldn't meet. I'm seeing a lot of LT's on the road, but not sure if any are also on this site/forum.

I'll treat to huckleberry ice cream next time!
