2019 Smokey Mountain Reunion??

Any interest in returning to the IH this Fall? I tried to see if there was a thread already started but couldn’t find one.

I’ve got it in my head to try and take my S1000R into the twisties. Of course, with the ride from NY, it will be in the bed of my truck most of the way. Might even bring my camper with me to really make it interesting.

Thoughts?

Yeah we are doing it again this year. The new owners don't want to list events as it may deter potential guests if they think a big group is there. Oct 10,11,12 this year.

Re: 2019 Smokey Mountain Reunion??

Oct 10,11,12? Starts on a Thursday?

It's not 11,12,13?

Just need to be sure for planning. My SO works 7 on 7 off and it's difficult to swap.

Yep, Thur - Sat. Sun is a pack up and go home day. Some like me arrive on Wednesday and get settled in for 3 days of riding.

Wait until you see the Conestoga wagons he bought, calls it "glamping" everything (a/c, fridge, big bed) but running water (have to use the bath house). We stopped in there Tuesday while we were staying at Tapoco for a few days.

Re: 2019 Smokey Mountain Reunion??

The Conestoga wagons John has mentioned are actually pretty cool. They have everything but bathroom facility’s. Saw 4 going in to old camping areas.

The new owners are also installing a gas station on site.

Best,

Last year, we discussed meeting for lunch at the Pisgah Inn. But, if you recall we were under the influence/threats of rain bands from the remnants of a hurricane. I'm not a big fan of wet riding and stayed put. Also, if memory serves me right, the weekend turned out better than folks had hoped and those who made the voyage seemed to have a great time. (saw the video) So, once again, weather permitting, let's talk it up and see if we can make it happen. Depending on which short cut I take...it is less than 80 miles for me. I'm fortunate enough to be able to make it a "day" ride without the necessity of booking a room and an overnight stay. As always, I enjoy meeting forum participants and the fellowship seems to always be enhanced by being able to put a face with a name.

I have another hobby of belonging to a worldwide group of Studebaker drivers/collectors. Recently, in Maggie Valley, NC, we celebrated our 51st annual gathering there. My first meeting with this group was in 1975. Back then, I drove my (new to me) 1955 Studebaker pickup truck. 45 years later...A couple of weeks ago...I drove the same truck to this year's gathering. Some of the folks are like family. Others are new. In addition to the familiar faces from the Carolinas, Georgia, & Tennessee...we had folks show up from Indiana, Florida, Virginia, and Maryland. We too have a very active forum, and it has solidified and made our organization that much more enjoyable.

Just as in that group...I hope to someday meet some of you folks. Even if we don't make it happen...it's still fun to contemplate and discuss.

So...if you are so inclined, let's keep the discussion alive. Thursday, Oct. 10, around 11:30(ish)...a laid back informal parking lot meet & greet...then lunch!

Never declare a cherished memory as "the best day of my life"...it will forever diminish the possibility for "Tomorrow" being the "Best Day!"

In the fall it can be a 2 hour wait for a table if the leaf-peepers are active and are there in large quantities. Will wait and see.

Don't know 'bout the hills where you live, but here in upstate SC it seems that we have had few days under 90 degrees in September and almost no rain! I'm seeing trees with foliage that would normally turn bright colors by this time of year, but instead, the leaves are withering, turning brown, and falling without the good colors. Not sure how much of a fall color spectacle we will have if we don't get some rain soon.

About the two hour wait...never all that bad if you have good company and great conversation while waiting.

You may be right, the leaves are just dropping off here as the days have been way too hot. There may not be any leaves to peep by then, plus the food is great.

Yep. And the trees are probably in dormant mode like the grass, no water uptake, might be shades of brown fall again, just like last time we had a drought.

My friend Ray is flying in from Michigan on Thursday & we are riding up & should be there around 6:30. Ray is riding my 2000 LT & I'll be on my 2004 LT. My 2004 turned 200,000 miles on it when I got home from work last week. Just finished full service & detailing on both bikes.

I've been following this forum for about a year and a half now and you all have been great in helping me with getting to know my 2005 LT. I hope to meet some of you guys this weekend. I'll be coming up from Marietta GA Friday night and will be staying down the road at the Two-Wheel Inn. Saturday morning I'll meet other BMW Club of Georgia members for breakfast at the Inn.

Does IH offer any home health care type personnel? Or retirement home liaisons? Something tells me they could be busy this weekend if that's the case.

We're in the main building at the end of the driveway for breakfast in the mornings and dinner in the evenings. I think breakfast begins at 7:30. Dinner at 6:30. The times could have changed slightly with the new ownership.

They have for the past few years. I didn't get one this time. I called to make sure my reservation was still in place (they lost it one year) and to ask about the meal pages. They have had some computer issues and didn't get them sent out. No worries. We can sign up when we arrive.

Hey!...since you are posting here, can I assume you folks all made it back to the Lodge OK? I really enjoyed meeting you and the group at the Pisgah Inn today! Lunch was great but the fellowship was the greatest!

Riding back down 276 toward Brevard there was hardly any traffic. Mid-week is the best time to ride these hills for us retired folks. It was a fun ride up and back down the mountain. I only encountered one school bus for a brief couple of miles near Flat Rock, NC. I parked back in my bike shed at about 3:40pm.

For me, today was a total 135 mile round trip.(You Iron Butt riders are free to roll your eyes) Pretty much perfect for an old geezer like me.

Hope all of you enjoy a terrific weekend of riding and a safe return home.

Re: 2019 Smokey Mountain Reunion??

It was good to meet you as well. Sounds like the new ramp worked out on the shed. Had a great ride back Ironhose and also ran into one school bus before we got off of 276 in Waynesville.

Yes the ramp works. But the style and gracefulness of the rider is questionable.

Sorry 'bout the back lighting of the photo but it was late in the day.

Marked safe from SMFR 2019. My favorite local ride is about 135 miles so no eye rolling from here. It was great to meet you up close and in person. I hope you re able to make it up again in April for Spring Training.

You and the others made me feel very welcome. I was impressed by the friendship and friendly conversation. Everyone seemed to be having a great time.

The only "hitch" I had was on the return trip down the Smokey Mtn. Parkway, about 12 miles down, when a guy driving a SUV decided to pull out of one of the roadside parks across both lanes and then stop in the middle of the road. I managed to assemble enough reflexes to miss him but it was certainly a reminder that "ALERT" should always be our default riding mode.

Today, I'm enjoying riding my reclining sofa, watching the rain (finally), and a little football.

Re: 2019 Smokey Mountain Reunion??

We are also home safe with just under 750 total miles. Had some traffic snarls before and after Chattanooga and dropped down to US 41 to cruise by the river in peace. It was good to meet the new people and visit with the regulars. Hope everyone had a great time as you could not ask for better weather.

Just in case you are pondering it the dates for STC in April are 15-19 (Wed - Sun) and SMFR in October are 14 -18 (Wed - Sun). Since Ironhorse no longer holds blocks of rooms I suggest you book early. If you are a Vet they give a very good discount, just ask for it when you call. They will collect one nights deposit on booking and the balance 60 days out from the event. Things are wide open for both events ... for now.

Made it home without issues, then again its only about 150 miles for us when we don't take a scenic detour.

Re: 2019 Smokey Mountain Reunion??

Debra and I made it home at 6:00. We stopped in Dillsboro just to wander around town a bit. Once through Asheville, I had the bright idea to make a detour through Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, NC to get some lunch. The roads were wet, but no rain. Stayed that way all the way home, but was just starting to mist as we parked the LT. We had a great weekend and are already looking forward to April!

This was my friend Ray's first time at the Iron Horse. We rode through the dragon on our way to having lunch on the Tennessee River at Calhoun's Fort Loudon Marina on Friday. I bought some pictures of Ray on the dragon & mailed them to him today.

He was a really nice guy and was pleased to have him ride with us. I think he normally rides Harleys so his buddies will probably give him what for about those pictures riding a real bike for a change

All kidding aside, he is welcome in my book no matter what he is riding so make sure you invite him back again.
