Helmet Dilemma - Opinion needed

Hi,
Gotta question.

I currently have a Shoei X-11; Great helmet.

On my last long distance tour, after 10 days, I could not stand the slight buffeting when the screen was all the way up, and the noise from the helmet.

So, I resolved to fix these problems. I purchased a +2 inch screen, and just got the Shoei Quest.

In testing it, i found, as in all of murphys laws that

The Quest is much more quiet but buffets (moves my head around a bit
The X-11 doesn't have any buffeting (smooth) but is loud.

So I try the same thing with earplugs.

The Quest is quite with the screen up, but the low frequency from the wind so bad with the screen down that it can't be done..

Course, screen down; the X-11 is a much louder, but doesn't very little low freq noise.

And, putting the screen up; The Quest is quite as a delight (headplugs in) with no low freq, while the X-11 is a noisier, but not much (earplugs in.

So, given the choice, would you put out the extra 350 so you don't have to wear earplugs day after day, and deal with slight buffeting?
Or
WOuld you rather use earplugs, and not have the buffetting?

D

Re: Helmet Dilemma - Opinion needed

I have been using an X-11 with earplugs for the last 3 to 4 years. It is quite light and lets in a lot of cool air. I liked my previous Arai Quantum better though.

My opinion would be to use your X-11 with earplugs and get a Schuberth C3 when you're ready for a new helmet. I know you didn't ask about the C3, but I can't help mentioning it because after trying one on not long ago it seemed so much better than any helmet I have every tried.

Anyway I've read that helmets are usually designed with the idea that the rider is in more of a "crotch rocket" position rather than sitting straight up. This has a lot to do with noise level and buffeting.

And you are correct in calculating the windshield into this dilemma. I'm using a Ztechnic shield now and there is less buffeting than the original BMW shield.

Best of luck.

My C3 is both extremely quiet and doesn't move around at all in any screen position on the LT or the K1200RS.

No mater what helmet I use I ALWAYS wear earplugs or earbuds if I want music. It cuts most wind noise & I hear traffic & other "Road" sounds better.

Re: Helmet Dilemma - Opinion needed

I have a shoei like yours and a Bell Star. Once I purchased the Bell Star, I never wore the Shoei again. Better ventilation, quieter, fit better, more comfortable, better made, blablabla.

There's always a trade-off. The more a helmet vents, the louder it's gonna' be.

You have to decide what your true priority is--do you ride in 100+ degree heat? Is most of your riding long days where you need ventilation? Or do you want a quieter helmet and are willing to give up some air flow for it?

Me? Once I started wearing ear plugs, I said to myself "why haven't you been doing this all your riding life?" so a super-venting helmet with more wind noise isn't an issue, and I can go for comfort (a good thing in Texas heat, where we had 45 straight 100+ days here last Summer).

Might be worth trying the Bell Star. And check out helmetharbor.com, their helmet reviews discuss both noise AND airflow/ventilation for all major helmets. (they said the Qwest was quiet, but sucked on the airflow side--as did webbikeworld.com)

I have an Arai Quantum, which is the quietest helmet I've ever owned, but I still use ear plugs. The slip stream of air over a moving motorcycle tends to create a lot of high frequency sounds that will damage your hearing over time, even though you may not notice them while riding. I would highly recommend having a set of custom ear plugs made. I had mine made by Big Ear at the Seattle motorcycle show a few years ago. I also use them 3X a week for swimming. They work fantastic and have been very durable.

As mentioned by a previous poster and it seems counter intuitive, but ear plugs will help you hear your radio or other communication more clearly.
