color change helmet

I just brought a system 6... due to lack of stock in shop I got a black color, looks very cool but!!!!

I have never had a black color helmet due to heat factor and low visibility.

Can I have it plotted to a fluo or white color.??

or can I have it even re painted??

Has any one done this to a top line helmet.??

Is there any danger in spoiling the outer shell.??

any advice will be well appreciated..thanks,

Re: color change helmet

For a long time I also never had a black helmet, but last time I went for anew helmet they had nothing else. Sooooooo long story short: There is no difference in heat that I can perceive. Visibility in low light is a different story.

Re: color change helmet

Years back I read a article where the Dallas Texas police department did a test using temp sensors and found there was no difference in heat between a black or white helmet. So it seems if you want a different color paint it that color, but it shouldn't make a difference in the temp.

PS; I have ridden in some very hot temps wearing my black helmets, ventilation seems to be the thing to worry about.

Re: color change helmet

An inexpensive way is to add decals, and some are reflective.

Re: color change helmet

Just read that again: PAINTING may be problematic, and the solvents on paint can attack the original shell, depending on what kind of shell and what solvents are used.

+1 on that. I have 2 black helmets and a silver one...no difference. Urban motorcycle myth. There is too much foam insulation to make any difference.

Re: color change helmet

I've got both in Florida and I can't tell the difference as far as heat is concerned. I have read though that white increases your visibility.

Re: color change helmet

Great thanks to all

I think I will try to plot the helmet.. no risk in solvents etc

As I have a white Shoei hornet just buy touching it it is always cool not at all hot.

tks.

Re: color change helmet

Painting the helmet is NOT a risk...the only risk is in getting paint (more specifically the propellant from aerosol paint cans) on the EPS foam INSIDE the helmet.

A couple years ago my brand new Shoei helmet got scratched when I put it inside the top case of my LT. I called customer service for Shoei, asked them if they sold touch-up paint, they said they don't, suggested I look for nail polish that would match (which i thought was interesting in itself).

As long as I had the guy on the line, I asked him "hey, is it ok to paint these things if I find someone who does it?" He told me that they put advisories NOT to for the reason i stated above, but that as long as you mask everything off to avoid getting anything INSIDE the helmet, it's fine.

Tape off everything, take the clear coat off with 800 or 1000 grit wet sand paper, put a fine layer of high quality primer on, smooth with 800-wet sand, and put whatever color you want on it.
