In Florida the majority of the population is all huddled up next to our beaches,
it's very pretty but always busy and crowded, I live in a 3/4 million people metropolis.
Sometimes I feel the need to "get away from it all"
fifteen minutes south of me I cross the Sunshine Skyway bridge
and another 15 minute ride from there are some really neat and rural roads,
I'm talking about the real and mostly forgotten Florida where one lane roads snake around farms that grow tomatoes or strawberries and phosphate strip mines have left huge craters and deep scars upon the land,
it amazes me that in an hour I can go from where I live to a place that hasn't changed in the last hundred years.
Some of my favorite roads are the "canopy roads" where Live Oaks ans Spanish moss cover the roadway and almost block out the light.
It was on such a one lane canopy road where as I rode by a little creek
there of to my left there was a deer carcass and a large flock of Turkey vultures "dining"
The "stealth" of my LT startled them and they all flew up at once scattering in different directions,
some of them flew out in front of me, turned in the same direction and scattered of into the tree line,
this all happened really fast, I was cruising and daydreaming at around 40mph
one of the biggest birds continued to fly under the canopy of trees about two to three car lengths in front of me at right about head level,
I was thinking to myself, wow look at that wingspan that's a huge bird, really close
that's when I noticed the white tail feathers, finally it started to register,
vultures don't have white tail feathers,
gracefully the big bird veered of to the left after flying along in front of me for about a long city block,
that's when I finally saw his white head, long neck and hooked beak,
a majestic Bald Eagle.
