WI to AK Suggestions

Riding from Wisconsin to Alaska on my LT. Leaving July 9th.
Taking hwy 94 west than possibly 2 to Montana, after that I am looking for some input from you road warriors on routes and stops along the way. Picked up the Milepost(excellent book). After Montana we're just wingin' it. Chime in with any suggestions or recommondations you may have.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

The ride is the objective, the destination is an excuse

Re: WI to AK Suggestions

I envy you! My wife and I rode the Al-Can last June to Tok and Anchorage. We used the transcanada hwy, Winnipeg to Edmonton, and then north to Dawson Creek and the Al-Can.

Out of the 3600 miles (one way) we had approx 200 miles of road construction. The toughest stretch is the last 100 miles getting out of Canada to the Alaska border. Basically from Destruction Bay on North.

It was a lot of frost heaves and HUGE potholes, please avoid the standing water, you never know how deep that hole is! Took us 3 1/2 hours for 140 miles.

Never had a problem with my 03 LT, no flats, took some great pictures of grizzlies right next to the road! My left eardrum has almost healed, after I suggested we stop and take the photos!

Take lots of photos, if you want a day by day description, we kept a blog:

Karen and I took the Cariboo Hwy 97 out of kamloops
Then the Yellowhead Hwy @ Prince George
To 37 at Kitwanga north to 37a to hyder

Very little traffic......no motor homes like the Alcan........
plenty of gas........and lots of beauty............................
Good camping along the Frazier river............................

I envy you the trip....................
Enjoy.

I went to Idaho last year via US 2 through ND and MT and do not recommend it. Kinda like slab with some stop lights. There is not much to see and lodging was tight apparently because of oil industry related job opportunities. It wasn't until we got close to Glacier NP that US 2 got nice. West of Glacier it was outstanding.

As an alternative, you might want to ride west on US 212 or even slab it on I 94 to Glendive, MT. You can pickup US 2 from there or some other highway (US 200 or US 12) to head west.

Ride Safe!
