Jet Lag from South Africa (GS -WOW!)

Returned last Saturday evening and thought the bio clock had readjusted. Woke up at 4:15 this morning since it was 11:15 Cape Town time!

OK, now that I have your attention, just returned form a two week adventure in SA riding a GS (on & off-road) to the north to Kruger & Swaziland and then a week later after an overnight train ride (w/bike) to Cape Town and the two coasts.

Don't know where to begin but here are a few pics for starters!

Welcome back, Paul. I'm looking forward to reading your extended ride report in your club newsletter.

I'm just a little jealous of your ability to do these globe-trotting bike tours. Good for you!

In my experience Howard, the best part of the trip is coming home. It is a beautiful country (SA) but unemployment is 60% (according to a cabbie) and there is still a significant amount of crime to the point where middle class folk live in walled compounds with barbed wire or electrified fences and have dogs as well. No problems with our small group and everyone was very friendly.

The travelogue will be a multi-part epic based on many of the experiences including the charge by the elephant. Guess he didn't like us taking his peanuts!

Ask me why they call the Lion the "King of the Jungle"! ((Have photos after and the indication that another lioness wanted some "action" as well-lying on her back with all fours in the air to attract the King)

A lioness in oestrus is closely followed by the males of the pride. When the female is ready to mate, an indication is given by her making advances to the male of her choice. Copulation is quick and noisy - lasting only a few seconds. After some 10 to 20 minutes, mating is repeated. This routine can continue unabated, day and night, for several days. The mating pair are reluctant to go off hunting with the other pride and usually remain behind. Interestingly, a pride will generally accept an outside lioness that is on heat!

A single male generally remains the consort of an oestrus lioness throughout the course of her mating period, although some lionesses may mate with more than one male. It is known that approximately one third of all mating sessions result in pregnancy, and should fertilization occur in perhaps the fourth day of oestrus, there is a high likelihood that multiple matings by a lioness may result in a litter where the cubs have different fathers. This could be simply to increase the genetic variation of her cubs, or to foster collective bonding within the pride, by the prevention of strong pair bonds forming, as well as greater pride cohesion: for example, males from the same pride often take over another pride together, which is more significant if they are closely related.

Dave,
This tour was offered at a discount at the Killington CCR auction from www.samatours.co.za
Daryl Berman, staff and family were extremely hospitable and even had a Braai (BBQ) at their home for the participants.

Even sampled the nutritious mopani worm

The second half of the tour was partnered with J B Train Tours concentrating around Cape Town and the Indian & Atlantic coastlines.

Re: Jet Lag from South Africa (GS -WOW!)

I lived in SA in the early 70's. The pictures make me home sick. I heard the same stories about unemployment and crime, yet everyone I know that went there has nothing but good things to say. Its on my bucket list...

PS: The train compartment looks exactly as it did in 1972, even the same colors

Paul,

Thanks for the pictures - looks like an incredible trip.

Monkey gland burgers??? Now that's why it's hard to muster the courage for a trip like that.
