My Alaska Adventure

My Solo June 2008 Alaska Adventure (7,229 miles in 15 days).

USA/Canada Port of Entry, Sumas, WA

Hi! I'm Paul. Glad you decided to come along on my Alaska Adventure. I am heading to Dawson Creek, BC.

When it says gravel slow down.

Construction Zone. Get used to it.

Re: My Alaska Adventure

1523 miles to Fairbanks. Other towns along the way are St John, BC, Ft Nelson, BC, and Whitehorse, YT, Delta Junction, AK.

My usual motel for the night. That night it rained so hard I rode into town and bought a tarp to go over the tent. Notice the cyclone fence. It is to keep the Bears out. It works unless someone leaves the gate open.

More gravel. Get used to that too.

A bear cub and mother. I don’t have to worry, I can outrun the woman taking the pictures.

Fort Nelson Hotel, Fort Nelson, BC.

Slow Down! The grating on the deck makes it hard to control the bike.

It looks like they are replacing the grating on the bridges with a normal road surface.

The bridge was frozen over. You can’t tell from the picture, but the shiny road surface is black ice.

Re: My Alaska Adventure

North Pole, Alaska

Having my RT serviced at Trail's End BMW in Fairbanks, AK. George wasn’t there when I arrived. George and I talked on the phone months before I went to Alaska. I asked him what he thought of me riding an RT up there. He told me just after he made a remark to the others, “We have another one asking about the Dalton.” He said, “Every kind of bike has come up here over the last 45 years and nobody back then cared what type of bike they had, they just came. Don’t worry about it and ride the RT.” That was great advice! Thanks George!

This is all I brought with me on the trip.

Fantastic Pictures Paul. A friend of mine and I are leaving July 2 and taking a similar route to yours on two LTs. We were wondering about LTs on the Dalton Highway, but from your pictures it should be manageable if the weather cooperates, huh?

Yes, if the weather cooperates you should be fine. The Dalton can get pretty muddy and slippery if it rains. Have fun and be safe!

Welcome indeed Paul.

I am making that trip from L.A. this coming July. I am glad to see that you made it on the RT as that is what I am riding up.

I have only question, how in the world did you keep you bike so clean.

Thanks Kevin, I stopped just before the bridge to take a picture and that's when I noticed it was frozen over. I walked out on it a little to check it out. It was really slippery near the side of the roadway. So I got back on the RT and went down the middle slow and easy with my feet down. I stopped in the middle to take a few more pictures. The tires gripped pretty well on the bridge surface. I didn't feel like I was going to fall or anything.

Re: My Alaska Adventure

I'm guessing you were thankful you stopped to take that picture. Could have been a different story had you hit it full speed unaware of the ice. Great pictures of the trip, though!

Last winter I mistakenly did a U turn on a road that had a little snow on the sides by the curbs. Got a little too close to the edge & down it went. I couldn't raise it back up by myself, because there was snow where I needed to stand to lift the bike. Now I carry a pair of Yaktrax.

Yes, I was glad I stopped and thankful I didn't hit the bridge at full speed. I'd be telling a different story and probably would have ended my trip.
