Katy (Houston, tx) to Westcliffe, CO and back
We just got off the K1200LT from our 6 day trip to Colorado and back. We left on Wednesday at 3p, spent 45 hours in Westcliffe and then headed back.
Here's a brief description of our trip:
Day 1: 270 miles to Brady, TX. 2nrs of heavy rain to start, beautiful after that
Day 2: beautiful 630 mi day to Santa Fe, with only rain in NM.
Day 3: what started as a 4hr trip
end up being 8. First 2hrs were great up to Ft. Gardner. Heading out of there, lightening, rain, 55f - seat heaters on low, heavy rain, 45f - seat heaters on high, hail, hail, hail, lightening, lightening, lightening, darker, darker, darker. After 20 miles, turned back and raced to gas station. Waited. Left again, only rain and more rain for 150 miles. Mud slick road last 4 miles - finally made it in one piece. Wore out! 200 mile trip was 300 and 8 hrs.
Day 4: no riding
Day 5: left at 12:30p. Rain on I-25, 55f - 50f - hail again. Lightening, lightening, more rain, high winds, I see sunlight ahead. After Raton, we're out of rain. West out of NM. High cross winds, 30mph with higher gusts. Make it 330 miles to Plainview.
Day 6: no rain at all! Temps up to 98f. 20mph winds, cross and head. 650 miles finally home.
Review of LT (2000 model). It hates crosswinds and head winds when two-up and trailer. Mileage was over 40mpg, dropped to 36 for the average over the 2,200 miles. We often have high winds in West Texas, so we'll have to figure out something better for the LT. Wive loved the first 2 days and 2 hrs. She didn't even mind the rain, hail and lightening, but "brutal" was the description of the last two days. She hated it.
Overall we enjoyed the trip, but wished it would have ended better.
