Beltronics Info

Greetings All,

I'm old but I still wanted to get an Iron Butt 1000 pin. I was visiting in Florida and it was just over 1050 miles to my home outside of Akron, Ohio. Prime time to get the certificate.

I thought it prudent to get a radar detector. After some indecision on my part I settled on the Beltronics RX65 as opposed to the Valentine. I liked the Valentine but the cost was a factor. I got the RX65 for just under $260.

As others in this group have done, I mounted the detector in a Pelican water resistant box. I'm not at all shy about stealing good ideas.

While I was "dinking about" with the wiring, I discovered that the middle pair of wires on the phone plug appear to be the control lines that work with the Beltronics "Smart Plug". On my unit (YMMV) if you short the control lines when the unit is NOT in alarm it acts as a volume control for the speaker and external speaker (if attached). If you short them when the system is in alarm, it mutes that alarm until the unit goes out of alarm. The control lines may do more than above. I am trying to get some more info about what else the "Smart Plug" can be programmed to accomplish.

A trip back to Radio Shack for a NO pushbutton switch and and a tube of silicone sealant provided an external volume control/mute button. As I often ride without my helmet speakers and microphone attached, I also mounted an inexpensive external speaker on the handle bar mount for the Pelican. As configured I can plug into the Comm System OR the external speaker. (See attached jpegs.)

It seemed to work as designed. I averaged a little over 65 MPH for the entire trip and went long stretches on the Southern interstates where the OBC told me that I had been averaging ~80 MPH. I did have several occasions when the RX-65 recommended I run a little slower. All of those occasions (but one) seemed to be justified within a short distance.

I hope this isn't old news to the group. I had not seen this information when I was looking for detector information. I also strongly recommend caution if anyone else tries this modification. I am not at all sure that all the Beltronic detectors are wired the same way. This IS how mine works. Again, YMMV!

Best Regards,
Jerry Salisbury

Well, I hope so, on the odometer I logged 1075 miles in 16 hours and 34 minutes. I'll submit the application next week and then wait.

I don't know what happened to the jpegs. I "thought" I attached them. I tried to attach them. I'm new to this forum and this format. Some years ago I was involved in the "old board" but I haven't learned much about using this forum.

I'll make another try at the attachments. (I did make another try, seemed to up-load. Maybe the file is larger than permitted. I used medium resolution but the three files are ~275K each. Is that too large?)

Best Regards,
Jerry Salisbury
