1972 transmission testing question

Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to "bench test" a 4-speed before taking my bike apart, changing the transmission, and bolting it all back up, only to find that the replacement unit has problems. My 1972 /5 has serious transmission trouble, and I have a second but untested unit to swap in.
Anyone who can suggest a test procedure, thank you in advance. I am thinking that, until the transmission is under load, it will be hard to tell one way or another.
