R90S being built at Max BMW

Anyone watching them build a R90S on Max BMW webcam? Very cool to watch them build a bike from their parts catalog.

Have fun,
Jer

Re: R90S being built at Max BMW

I've been following along, so to speak, as they discuss it in their weekly email. What a great idea - you get a new "old" beemer.

Perhaps there is method to their "madness" here: you build the first one as a proof-of-concept, then start another line of business providing new, reliable vintage BMW bikes.

I would love to be sitting there watching this process, and maybe turning a few bolts.

Hi Howard,

I haven't heard what the actual cost for buying a bike from catalog parts would be, but figure only a marketing benefit from this would make it worth while.

Have fun,
Jer

Yes but . . . you don't have the economy of scale of mass production or special jigs used in the factory. It's a great concept though. It has amazed me that i can order parts for my '90 K75 at a relatively reasonable price.

Re: R90S being built at Max BMW

I wonder what other bikes have a complete set of parts available?
I checked the R26, no frame...
Regardless of the cost (which is going to be very high as I see it) they ought to have a listing for all the 'complete' unassembled bikes they can offer.
That would be cool. I am enjoying the whole idea.

Paul,

You (and Jerry, above) are certainly right on target that a bike assembled this way has to cost more than one built on the production line, I just think if they could get the cost differential low enough that they would create (uncover?) a market for new-vintage bikes. You're getting something you've always (ahem) had your eye on but now it's brand new. I assume BMW's two-year parts warranty would apply to the whole bike!

I did hear the man-behind-the-shoulder-cam mention that there's a warranty and it's 2-years because that's what comes with the parts. I also like the idea of having a brand new classic bike. My 85 R80RT is seeing some aging issues. I just replaced the throttle assembly due to age/usage. Sure is nice to have the parts so available. Heck, my 99LT is seeing some aging issues! I have a broken hinge (plastic repair) on the top case to deal with in the spring.

Have fun,
Jer

It's not the real one... There is a bike switch at the end of the vid.
Amusing video none the less. ;~)
