New to Me R1150R

Good Evening All,

Recently came into a little bit of money and being a complete fool, I decided to get a smaller bike to complement the LT. I've always like the looks of the R1200R and fell in lust after my test drive at Max BMW. Alas, I could not afford the 12-15K on a new one so I had to settle for a used one.

I found this beauty locally on sale for $5500:

When I made my appointment with the owner, I got him to knock of $1,000 off the top- sight unseen. When I got view the bike, I was shocked by the condition. It turns out, the owner had to store it outside his garage for the past year. Of course, his house is surrounded by ocean water. Several of the tiny bits were rusted! Plus, it has been knocked over and things have fallen on the tank a number of time. That being said, with only 7k on the odometer, I had him knock off another $1500 and I pulled the trigger on the bike. A 2002 r1150r with just 7,034 miles for $3000.

Wiped out the wire wheel brush and went to town. Spent almost 3 hours scrubbing the beast down. It went from this:

to this:
.
Changed the brake fluid, changed oil and synched the carbs. The bike runs like a top! I have some cosmetic work to do on the Remus can. It looks like the aluminum wrapping started to oxidize in a few spots. As a result, I have a few small holes. I'm not that worried about because the bike still has that great Remus growl.

In NYS, we have to get our bikes inspected annually. This bike was last inspected in 2009. Here is the photo of the sticker just before I had her inspected:
.
In three years, the PO put on just a little over 200 miles. In my first weekend with her, I put on almost 300. This bike simply rocks!!!

This past weekend, with the LT still in the shop for a clutch replacement and more, I took the R to the mountains and had a great time!

All I can say is WOW!!!!!! The bike handles great! This is a fun bike to ride! The torquiness (sp?) of the engine is great fun in the twisties! It's sooooo much lighter than the LT. Its almost like I just think about leaning this way or that and before I realize it, the bike is already in the right slot position. Amazing!

I do need to replace the windscreen with something bigger to help with the wind noise. Don't get me wrong, in the 90+ heat we had, the wind was a welcome relief but the wind noise I could definitely do with out. I've even had to resort to wearing foam earplugs to give me some relief.

As for the saddle, yup- it's a beemer! It's gotta go! I wonder if Russell makes one for her.

I'm even thinking about doing a track day with her. Wish me luck!

Re: New to Me R1150R

Looks like you got a great deal!!! She sure looks sweet. As a 2011 R1200R owner, I understand how great your bike handles, I still keep looking for excuses to ride mine. Just topped 22.2K Miles in a little over 18 months. Two suggestions: Before plunking down a lot of money for a custom seat, try an Airhawk seat pad. I've had a bruised tailbone most of my adult life and a long ride (over 200 miles) had me popping Advil three days past the ride. With the Airhawk, no more Advil required. Best thing about an Airhawk is they let you try it for up to 60 days. If it doesn't work, send it back. Worst case is you're out the return shipping. (www.airhawkseatcushions.net/) I think I paid about $150, which was a lot better than a Mustang seat I had for a Honda VTX 1300.

Second Suggestion is don't overlook Cal-Sci Windshield. I'm very impressed with mine. Enjoy your bike

Re: New to Me R1150R

Sometime in the late 1990s regulations in Germany changed to the effect corrosion proofing of nuts/bolts was no longer permitted using traditional methods. Environmental concerns.

Lots of long-time BMW owners complained about corroded fasteners on the Oilheads.

Wheel bolts on your Mercedes or BMW car will corrode now, too.

PS: IMHO earplugs should be standard practice all the time rather than "last resort."

Re: New to Me R1150R

Nice ride.
way to go on the price negotiating.

BTW, is that one of those designs without a full frame, but utilizes the engine to do double duty, acting as part of frame also?
