Fuel Capacity

Maybe a dumb question, but here goes. Spec's for the R1200R says fuel capacity is 4.8 gal and a reserve of 0.8 gal. Does that mean my tank has a 5.6 gal capacity?

Re: Fuel Capacity

From this site, it states 18 liters.

I would say that you only have 4.8 US gallons capacity. So at the 4.0 gallons mark of usage in a perfect world with an accurate fuel strip, you should have indicator on bike warning you that you have 0.8 gallons left.

Re: Fuel Capacity

The reserve is included in the total capacity. 18 liters is the total volume of the tank. Depending upon how you ride, you have a range of 200-220 miles per tank. I always set the odometer at each fillup and when I reach 150 miles, I start looking for a gas station to refuel.

Re: Fuel Capacity

Same thought I had but reading the BMW website made me question it. Twice I've pushed to over 200 miles and both times I took 4.6 gals. It seemed to have more left than 0.2 gals. I guess I just don't know how close I got to pushing the bike home. I usually try not to exceed 175 miles. One thing that has been really consistent is the mpg. It rarely moves away from 48 mpg. Average since having the bike is 48.2 mpg. Only big change was the mountains in Colorado where it went up to over 50.

Thanks for your inputs

Re: Fuel Capacity

Just bought my first BMW motorcycle in Daytona, rode it around a while, almost got on 95 to head south and figured i better check the gas, had no idea how to figure the gas gage at the time and put 4.8 gallons in the bike. Imagine my surprise when i read the owners manual.
