Oil pressure light on R80RT

After sustained highway speeds, when my '85 R80RT comes back to idle, the oil pressure light comes on. I can turn it off by slightly opening the throttle, but the light comes back on at idle. Anything above idle and there's no light. And, the light never comes on when I'm in city traffic. I've owned the bike since new, and I vaguely recall changing the oil pressure sending unit on the side of the sump maybe 15 years ago or so. Is it time to change it again? Or should I just blip the throttle whenever the light comes back on?

Most likely the sending unit needs to be replaced. When did you change the oil last? You might have a crimped gasket at the filter.

I changed the oil and filter about 400 miles ago.

It is still probably the sending unit, but if it started right after the oil change it might be worth check the filter gaskets and metal shim to make sure they are not damaged. It is fairly easy to pinch one of the outer gasket parts when putting the cover plate back on.
Be sure the metal shim goes in first then the o-ring.

Re: Oil pressure light on R80RT

A valid question. But, no, I bought the bike new in 85 and quickly figured out the difference between the lights, thank you very much. In 85 the airheads quit using a metal shim so that's not an issue, either. There is an o-ring around the triangular cap, but there's no evidence of weeping oil so I'm pretty sure that's correctly installed. I'll just keep monitoring the condition. If it gets worse I'll swap out the sending unit.

Re: Oil pressure light on R80RT

I replaced my sending unit last year due to it leaking. It was pretty easily to do since there's no oil leakage when removed. I tried to find one at a local auto parts store, but the threads were wrong. Found it with an internet search. I believe it was under $10. If you need I'll look up the specifics when I get home later.

Re: Oil pressure light on R80RT

Two out of four ain't bad. The larger question is how is it that a bike I bought new is now eligible for an antique license plate?
