Re: 1999 R1100R possible purchase
My 1st BMW was a 95 r1100r I put on 10k b4 I traded it on a K1100LT. The r1100r is a very flexible platform. I had mine set up with a windshield and bags and rode it from Chicago to Austin, TX in two days. The bike never hiccuped, but speaking of hiccups the 1st generation oilheads(the 1100r series) was notorious for "surging" issues with its fuel injection. Mine surged for the 1st few thousand miles and it pretty much went away. Some people went insane over this and BMWNA never acknowledged the problem, however the next generation (r1150r) seemed to have different fuel injection that worked itself out.
Other than the surging Im not aware of any other complaints, I enjoyed the bike it is your typical jack of all trades standard motorcycle. Since its a BMW there are enought accessories to get reay for touring or you can leave it naked and a bit sportier. Its not killer fast, but its no dog either. Its comfortable enough to ride all day in, but lack of weather protection makes weather extremes (rain, cold etc...) a little more challenging. If your son in law has a shorter inseam the bike can be lowered as well. I think its a good choice as a first bike because its an easy bike to ride, its light, faily nimble, has ABS and no body work to repair if he tips it over (we wont talk about anything worse!)
Check out R1100r.net its a sight similar to this in that its dedicated to that particular model. You can also get good ideas on some of the farkles others have added to their bikes. My personal favorite I wouldnt have thought of until I saw the pictures were the guys who put GS handguards for wind protection just as an example.
Hoped this helped, good luck, and I suppose congrats on the new son in law.
