Steering on R850R

I had mentioned a while back I had "acquired" my son's '96 R850R with less than 12K on the clock. I have been riding it as a daily commuter since end of August and added about 2K to it. My dilemma since I got it is it feels like the steering is a little too loose. It does have a damper and I don't know how much resistence it should provide, but I am wondering if I shouldn't get in and tighten the steering head bearings a little. I had a friend take it for a ride today and he agrees it does feel abnormally loose. Of course going from the LT to the 850 throws me off with the difference in weight and size so I had a hard time telling. Any input here?
