Question R1200CL vs. K1200LT

Hi guys,

Sold my Honda Shadow Sabre a week ago and looking to move up.

I'm new to BMW bikes and am trying to find the right one. I like the way both LT and CL look but have yet to test ride them.

I was going to ask for pros/cons comparison but have just found two threads on the subject and have no further questions really. CL is probably not much better for my needs than the Sabre. I will need the 2up capability and the power of the LT if I go with BMW. I do like the stylish classic look of the CL though... Wonder if CL's lights and the fairing can be swapped out on the LT.

Own them both.

Long.......

I have owned them both. Its very hard at least for me to pick a favorite, both bikes have similarities but they are sooooo different in so many ways...

Test riding both would be my first advice. Than write down on paper what are you looking for on touring bike.

My wife was mad when I sold the CL. She loved it, the style, the color (I had the brown color) the confort. But she also loves the LT. We just took a 750 mile trip over labor day weekend.

So here are a few categories and who I pick, than riding impressions.

Rider Confort BOTH
Passenger confort BOTH
Power LT, LT, LT.
Luggage Space. LT
Looks BOTH
very different looks, LT is futuristic, modern curvy fairing, but the CL has a classieness to it. That is unbeatable.

Amenities LT
you will get the cruise control, heated grips and seats on both, and the radio on both, but the whole package works better on the LT.

Smoothness LT, LT, LT.

Character CL by a land slide. Some people are huge into character (Ducati guys for example) I am not, both bikes have a lot but the CL just has it in every body panel in every little detail.

OK so by looking above you would say that I am one of those guys that if I could afford it I would have both, and I would. Why?

If you want a no nonsense, long distance mile eater that is confortable, smooth, powerfull, looks good and has everything you need the LT is the machine without any doubt.

If you want a confortable machine, for weekend trips, a machine that oooozes relaxation and "easy riding" the CL just has the package. It does not carry as much weight nor luggage, it is NOT as smooth as the LT, the boxer is really buzy at times you have to learn the rev range, the power is to be desired, it leaves you hanging a few times until you get use to it.

Its kind like this. I am in Atlanta. So I give you two examples.

1- Lets ride down to Tallahassee, FL and spend the weekend with my brother....... LT LT LT.

2- Lets head up to Helen GA, through Dahlonega and Cleveland, average speed 55 mph, chilling, relaxing hearing the wind and the nice thump of the motor, the CL is just for that.

I cannot afford both, I choose to sale my k1200S and my r1200CL and went back to an LT. I used to have a 2002. But now got a 2006, huge power difference and slow speed handling.
