2004Rt Rear Shock

I'm coming up on 40K with the original shock. When I move the bike around with the engine off I occasionally hear a clicking noise emanating from (I think) the rear shock.

99% of the miles were solo and I pack light. Is there a definative way of determiining when a shock needs to be replaced?
