Warranty needed on a used 2002 R 1150 RT with 35K miles?

Hi all - a newbie here, both to BMW motorcycles and the forum (though I HAVE posted in the K-bike section before).

I just plunked down a few hundred bucks on a really nice used 2002 R1150RT with 35K miles on it. After riding a newer R1200RT and an older K1100LT, I decided this 1150 was the best choice for me and my budget. It's got a lot of the goodies of the newer 1200 RTs and didn't cost me an arm and a leg. FWIW - the bike is replacing a '99 Honda Aero 1100 V-twin.

Since I haven't yet taken delivery of it yet - I have a few days to answer the question in my mind of optional warranty coverage. I can get a two-year warranty for $900 - which includes EVERYTHING on the bike short of maintenance items. It includes seals and gaskets - my biggest concern.

I've read of some K1200LTs having rr drive seal/bearing failure and have even read of a couple instances of the R1200RT rr drive going bad. So I'm interested in your opinions if the $900 is worth it to cover this two years out. Thanks.

Yep, $900 is a good deal. Make sure your local dealer is familiar with the aftermarket company. You also need to check that there is an ABS rider... those little devils are spendy!

Check with Ted at www.ascycles.com they are offering extended warranties at a discount.

The info was posted in the supporting dealers' forum.

As with most insurance - It's a good deal if something breaks, it's a bad deal if it doesn't.

My preference with regard to extended warranties and other insurance is, generally, I'd rather have the $900 in hand today.

About a year and half ago I bought a used R1100GS with 35K miles on it and, other than maintenance and some self-inflicted items, the only expenses I've had were weepy valve cover gaskets. They were a lot less than $900 -- about $30 for both cylinders including the camshaft sprockets rings. I could probably still replace the rear bearing and have money left from the $900.

Ultimately you're paying to feel good. How good do you want to feel?
