Inside of Headlight -lens foggy

2004 K12GT. Seems there is some type of flim on the inside of the headlight lens. Anyone experience this and found a way to clean it??

Re: Inside of Headlight -lens foggy

That happened in the past when people tried to use high wattage halogen bulbs. 85 watt could cause problems, 100 watt most assuredly did. The added heat from the too high wattage drove plasticizers out of the housing material, near the bulbs and they condensed on the lens and reflector.

People have tried to clean the inside when this happened, very difficult at best. I think most ended up replacing the very expensive headlight assembly.

I had a thought once when this problem was reported, maybe putting some small pieces of cleaning sponge inside with a little soapy water, and shake the heck out of it for a while, then rinse the inside well and let it dry, maybe in a warm oven. Don't know if it will work, but it is worth a try.

Re: Inside of Headlight -lens foggy

It was like that before I installed an HID H7. The orig 55w was still in there. Thinkin I first try to remove the parking lamp and shooting some compressed-can air in there. thanks for the assist.

Re: Inside of Headlight -lens foggy

If its plasticizer your approach will do nothing. In fact it won't even remove the yellowish powder sometimes left if a cheap bulb explodes in the lamp.
It will take the right solvent and a mild fine abrasive with agitation to clean that glass in all probability and doing that without damging the reflector is a bit touchy- the reflector won't like the solvent and neither will any adhesive used for the front lens (many lights use a 2 part butyl but I've not examined an LT housing carefully). I've been successful at cloeaning a few truck lamp housings but its a PITA.
Try one of the usal place for a used lamp housing in decent shape...
