Re: Top Case Options

Hey there, I just picked up a 2004 K1200GT and was asking the dealer about top cases, he told me that the only BMW case that fits this bike is the 31L case and BMW had many reported incidents of the top case dislodging while on the road. Rider hits a bump and the case comes off. Apparently BMW had to replace many cases.

Anyone have experience with this issue or ever heard of it. I did notice the case is still available from dealer sin the USA. Anyone running with this case?

It's all true. On my RS I went thru 2 BMW top cases, before I finally bought a Givi.

You have to replace the rear mounting rack with Givi's replacement. When this first happenned to me, I was riding with the dealer's service manager, who saw it all happen. No problem with the warranty claim. The second time, I remember hitting the bump, but since I was so parnoid about it happenning again, I had the habit of securing the top case with a bunge net, so it ended up dangling behind the bike rather than bouncing of pavement and going who knows where. I complainedd to the dealer who agreed to give me a refundtowards the purchase to the Givi top box.

The Givi has never fallen off, and I have 66k miles on the bike now.
