K100

I have a friend who has a K100. he'll be riding along and it will go into the safe mode. Sometimes he can pull in the clutch turn the key off wait for the engine to stop then turn the key back on and let out the clutch and it will run normal again.
Other times no matter what he does it will not reset and he has to ride home in the safe mode max rpm 3000. Anybody have any ideas?

Re: K100

What year K100 and what do you mean by "safe mode"?

two or three known and common problems with these bikes are:
Ignition switch contacts get dirty and cause dash lights to flicker and other strange and random electrical problems.

Hall effect pickup goes bad. These usually fail when they get hot and the engine will not run.

Starter gets dirty and the load shed relay feature doesn't work properly again causing a variety of electrical related failures.

My '87 K100 had a limp home mode that protected the motor when the computer thought there was a problem. It makes the mixture rich and limits the RPM. The idea was you could ride to the dealer, hook it up to diagnostics where the tech could see the problem fix it, and clear the error to put it back into full power mode. It also could be the motronic unit itself going bad.

Re: K100

Greetings Fonda

Early base K100 parts are becoming very hard and very expensive to find and purchase. You really need to think hard and be ready to jump on available parts if and when they apprear. I sent you an email. Contact me and I'll see if can be of any help to you.

Cheers.
