K1100lt trouble 1000 miles from home.

Greets all, my friend is on the way to Redmond but is having an issue in Denver. Says the fuel pump has started to make some noise and fuel is leaking out of the overflow hose. The only thing that comes to my mind is the carbon canister removal procedure on my 1200LT. Are there any similarities between the 1100 and 1200 LT models in this regard? Or does anybody want to venture another opinion?

She is near a dealer in the Denver area (not sure which one) but would like to avoid the cost and delay to the trip if it could be avoided. Thanks all for your input. Feel free to ask me any questions if they may help with a diagnostic.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobobomy!

Fuel leaking out of "overflow"? then it's expanding in the tank.... probably overfilled. If so, the cannisterectomy will need to be performed...
Better yet, if someone on the board here from Denver area would be available to get "eyes on" the problem..

Is there a procedure on this forum? Or is it the same as the 1200LT. I have done that to my own bike and could talk her thru it. Thanks in advance!

Re: K1100lt trouble 1000 miles from home.

I put almost a hundred thousand miles on a K1100LT and the only problem I ever had was a split fuel filter,

the fuel filter is much easier to access than the K1200,
just remove the entire gas cap (three screws) if I remember correctly.

When the fuel filter or possibly a hose connecting the fuel filter splits
it is squirting fuel at high pressure inside the gas tank,
depending upon fuel level it could come out through the overflow,

if that's it it's quite obvious just look inside the tank and turn the key on
stick your hands inside and remove a couple of hose clamps.
(even my bear paws fit)

Did the K1100 even have the charcoal canister? Like Silver Buff stated, open the cap and turn the key. If you see turbulence you have a problem in the tank.

Well, the dealer could not duplicate the issue so it may just have been an overfilled tank. She is off and past Salt Lake City with no further issues. Thanks to everyone for your input!
