K1100LT's - Any Evidence At All of Misfires/Spluttering?

Gents,

My 1998 K1100LT, due to sub-standard petrol, is suffering from dreadful misfiring & spluttering I have now had a reply from Tesco, the company who sold me the sub-standard petrol.

I have asked them to foot the bill for the work involved in cleaning out my petrol system …… they have refused.

In essence, they have stated …….

“it seems that misfiring & spluttering is quite a common problem with the BMW K110LT, (sic), motorcycle”……

Now I have owned 3 K100’s, (I did 44,000 miles in 18 months on one), a K1200 and this current K1100LT and I have never had them miss a beat let alone misfire once. They all performed perfectly.

The question to you guys, (I know the answer), is ……

Is there any evidence at all that the K1100LT is prone to “misfiring & spluttering”.

They have also state that …….

“owners of the BMW K110LT, (sic), motorcycle prefer to use Super Unleaded petrol to get optimum performance”.

…… which is complete bollocks.

I am relying on the knowledge of this forum to substantiate my case.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Dave - best of luck in your 'fight for what's right'. I don't have a clue regarding the K1100 bike history, butt were I you, I'd check out some of the listings under the Related Links menu on this home page. Also, there is the Internet BMW Riders forums, which would be an excellent source of info. I don't have the URL link handy, butt Google is your friend. Best regards.

Have you tried draining the gas tank and re-filling with better gas ?

If it's the fuel, That should solve the problem.

You might need to replace the fuel filter, But that's about all I can think of.

If you just want somebody else to be responsible then good luck with that.
They probably have deeper pockets and can hold out longer than you can.

Fix the bike, If after that you're certain it's their fault, You can always sue...

No, the flying brick doesn't act up without a good reason....ever...
And they're not going to roll over just because you say so.....
That's not the way big business works.

Good Luck.

Re: K1100LT's - Any Evidence At All of Misfires/Spluttering?

I put 90k on a K1100LT and she sputtered and missed a few times due to poor or contaminated fuel,
but never once "spluttered"

each time I poured a little fuel injector cleaner in the fuel
and in less than 20-30 miles the problem went away.

Always try the cheap and easy stuff first,
You might want to change the fuel filter afterwards,
just as a precautionary measure.

Re: K1100LT's - Any Evidence At All of Misfires/Spluttering?

I have a 94 K1100LT with 68K on it. I have experienced a sputtering only after a long period of not riding, (9 months or more), & that was only once. I drained the fuel, & replaced the fuel filter. That fixed the problem. I found a local station that changes the filter in the pump once a month, & the owner tests his underground tanks for water & contaminants every 2 weeks. He says it is good public relations & cheaper than lawsuits & paying customers repair bills. When I travel, I go to a branded station, & ask the manager when he changed the pump filters. If he can't remember, or it was a while back, I go elsewhere. I use mid-grade in my bike. The premium costs more, & the performance & mileage is not much better. Good luck in dealing with the mother%&*#ers.

Re: K1100LT's - Any Evidence At All of Misfires/Spluttering?

I had a K10rt that had that problem. Turned out the be a defective fuel pressure modulator. I don't know if your K1100 has the same fuel system as my K100. The other possibilty would be the fuel filter. They are prone to splitting.
