94 K1100LT engine knocking

A buddy of mine was just telling me of a guy he knows that has a 94 K1100LT . He was telling me the bike has about 60-70 thousand miles on it, & it only does it while idleing (knock that is). The oil light doesn`t go on when it is idling & the oil is full & fresh. Is there anything i should look at (going to visit him tomorrow) that would give him that kind of noise. It stops when you take off & don`t hear a peep while riding. I`m woundering it it could be a cam chain , chain tensioner or is there any other chain in there that could do that (like the big servo chain on the back of my 1100 Goldwing when carbs are out of sinc.

Thanks for your help & don`t know a thing about these K-engines

Thanks for the link & i`m going to bring my auto Stethoscope to have a listen. I have had it for years & found noises that was hard to hear otherwise.

My K11 used to have a knock at idle that would go away with increased rpm
or when I pulled the clutch in,
had something to do with a spring and some alternator cushioning rubbers wearing out,
it started around 60-70 K,

I sold the bike around 90k and its still running strong @ 125K
Those engines have been known to go as much as 300k,
if it runs good I wouldn't worry much about a little noise.

You beat me to it. There is a cheap $14 spring inside the engine (tensioner spring) that goes bad, plus the "monkey nuts" (alternator vibration isolators) The bad part is for the spring, you'll need to tear the engine down to get to it.
Check this page where he did a rebuild/restore of a K100 and had the infamous knock. http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/bvogel/K100/K100.htm Also check what he says about the alternator drive bearing causing noise.

Re: 94 K1100LT engine knocking

OK just got back from L.i. N.Y. & had the owner of the K1100LT come over so i can take look at it & also to listen to the knock. Well i used the probe to listen to the right side of engine (crank side) The altanator had a very slight tap to it but nothing to even hear with the human ear. I also listen to the crank cover & nothing (just a smooth sound) Now i went to the left side valve cover , And with the engine running at idle you can here it without the probe , but goes away as soon as you bring up the RPM`s. Now i took the probe & put it on the intake side of the valve cover (top & side) & you do hear a little faint tapping . Now when i went to the exhaust side of the valve cover you hear the engine knocking (very strange) & it`s all across the 4cyl`s where you can`t pinpoint where it was the loudest. So as i brought the probe slowly from front to rear it sounded the same (i did this several times , back & forth & came up with the same thing). I was figuring on maybe a piston slap at first , but it doesn`t sound like a cracked scirt. There is no exhaust leak & my buddie & i looked at his K1100 factory service manual & didn`t see anything on that side that could make that noise. I hope someone can figure something out. I have another question on brakes (same bike model) but different bike (new thred)

Did the knock stop when you pulled in the clutch?
If it did its the clutch spring.
And yes its a "hellova" lotta work to replace that spring,
the good news is it will probably never get any worse or cause any problems.

My goto guy bike guru (Joe Kats) former owner of BMW of orlando
told me all of the above, I take his word as "gospel"

Nope same noise clutch in or out & i could here it as he was idling out of the driveway from the garage (about 20 feet) but then as he pulled away it went away. This is something that needs attention , but it has been doing it for 6 years & 10,000 miles (maybe less) When he first bought it the guy told him it was a normal sound for the K & told him he was only selling it for health reasons (yea right) After hearing other K`s he went back to the P.O. & the guy had a new Goldwing in the garage (sick my butt). So now he`s worried about this engine blowing up. He`s going to bring it to some BMW shop to have them have a look (without ripping engine out) This sound will determin the amount he will want to sell me the bike. He said if it`s simple he`ll get it fixed & put new tires on it , but if they have to go in deep he will drop the price drasticly & no tires. I`m not afraid to go into the engine if i had to but would rather not.

Re: 94 K1100LT engine knocking

Hi confish86,

I've recently bought myself a '94 K1100LT with 45,000 miles a few weeks ago. And it's been lovely until yesterday, now it's suddenly started making the exact same knocking noises which you're describing - did you ever get a solution to this?

Thanks
Stu

Re: 94 K1100LT engine knocking

Possible injector knock???? They have been known to make noise at idle.

Re: 94 K1100LT engine knocking

Not that im aware of, however, with your scope in place at each injector you should be able to pick up the knock if its any or all injectors. Nothing to get alarmed about if thats the noise.

OK, I found the answer for me anyway - There was a blanking cap missing. Visit here for details: http://redsoket.com/index.php?showtopic=60&st=45

Maybe it'll help the original thread starter.

Thanks dgoodbmw

Re: 94 K1100LT engine knocking

I had a K1100 for several years, and it always knocked. I never heard one that did not. I sold it to a guy from Florida, and when he picked it up he heard the noise, but expected it as his brother had one also, and had told him about it. Just ride it.............
