K1200LT Owners in NorCal

I'm thinking about getting my K1200LT seat rebuilt by Russell Day-Long in Shasta Lake, California. While I could ship my seat to them, I'd rather take advantage of their "ride-in service" to have it built the same day I'm there; this gives me a chance to see their seat cover fabrics in person and get the new seat fine-tuned, if necessary, to fit me. I don't have the time to ride there, and I sure don't want to tow the bike that far, so I had this idea:

Delta Airlines has a credit on file for me that has to be used before next fall. Some time next summer I could fly to the nearest major airport with my K1200LT seat, rent a car and drive to Russell, and then get the seat rebuilt. Russell won't do a ride-in service without a bike present (and it really doesn't make sense to not have the bike present in this scenario), so I was wondering: Is there a K1200LT owner who could bring their bike to Russell for a day (a week day - they aren't open on the weekend)? The idea is that they put my rebuilt seat on your bike, check out the fitment, and then we put your seat back on and you go your way.

What do you think... anybody out there want to take a day out of their schedule for this project?

And I should add -- there is some small chance that we would ride our LT there as part of a summer vacation, so the whole concept is very much undecided at this time. In the meantime I'll keep an eye out for a Russell seat for sale somewhere.

Hi Howard;
From the looks of your USA map you just need to ride out west and fill in a few more states and attend an HDDC Wednesday dinner.

Keep us advised of your plans.

Spare room available 3.5 hours south of Shasta Lake.
Actually I'm 3.5 hours from just about all the good stuff to see in Nor-Cal.
Stop and stay awhile.
Still have the 02 LT in the garage, not sure if your seat fits?
Another option is to fly to where someone is willing to loan you an LT, ride to Russell and back.

Hi Howard,

What time this summer are you thinking about heading to Shasta? I might be interested in taking a run up to Russell to see their shop and spend a little more time riding the area. I had them do mine several months ago and am pleased with how they turned out - leather uppers/vinyl lowers, pillion seat and backrest covered to match.

Hi Doug,

Yes, my states-visited map has lots of opportunities. The job situation usually dictates how much vacation time I have; a trip from Ohio to California and back would take a significant amount of time off. There is much to see along the way, and we would not want to ride to the west coast and back just to get the seat done.

I'm not sure if the 2005+ LT seat is the same as 2004 and prior; it seems I've read somewhere here that they are different. Anybody out there know about this?

Thanks for the additional suggestions and offer. I'll keep you folks updated as this very tentative plan develops.

The 05 to 09 are different than the 99 to 04. One of our club members got back yesterday from flying out to get his Corbin seat made. He used a bike that he borrowed in the area.

We're not even close to a date at this point. It's just a pie-in-the-sky thought that we're tossing around.

Nice looking seats on your LT. It's good to hear from yet another satisfied Russell customer; that's very much the majority of posts I've read about their seats. I'm curious - how did you decide between leather and vinyl? I have read other threads about the leather/vinyl combo, but others prefer all of one covering or the other.

That's just what we needed to know. Thanks, Dave.

I had read a lot of input regarding the pros and cons of leather vs vinyl or a combination. I also looked at Russell's website pictures and didn't like how the all-leather seats looked on the sides after they had worn - they looked like they had broken down and had not retained their smooth textures. I also didn't like the thought of sitting on a vinyl top that doesn't breath in hot weather (that's one plus, however for the "like buttah" competitor's seat). The combination of leather seating surfaces and vinyl sides appeared to be the compromise I was looking for, and I liked how the looked in the pictures. My only concern now is getting them wet, so I bought a jar of Skidmore's beeswax for waterproofing. Good luck whichever way you go…

Had a Russell on my Gold Wing. The removable backrest was really nice. In any case they provided a nice cover for it too.
