I have not ridden Hwy 299 which runs above Hwy 36 but heard that 36 was a little more scenic. Maybe we could an RT trip through there.

Why the put down of roads in your own state. I take it you have 1000% more knowledge and experience in the area than I have. After all the furthest I have ventured into your state is just west of Vegas on I-15.
I was hoping on my trip to visit in San Diego to ride the coast mainly on 1, and 101 as far north as I care to. I had heard so much about them and the views of the setting sun on the Pacific horizon. Is the fact that it is crowded the only factor in not favorable. Guess I will see for myself.

Tell you the truth I am least knowledgeable on CA roads thus I rely on Pashnit but generally I would rather avoid main roads but limited road through an area such as Yosemite is worthless in my opinion during the late spring to summer season. Expect to travel no more than 25 mph, stop and go through Tioga Pass.

I would recommend pashnit.com for you planned California travel. It has a wealth of information on the best roads in the PRK (People's Republic of Kalifornia).

The main problem with the major scenic routes is when you get near big population centers on the weekends and holidays. Some weekday commute traffic if your timing is off. I think Yosemite is 35mph through the Park. Anyway, you don't do that route to see how quickly it can be done.
Get caught once in 101 north coast weekend traffic and you'll understand some of the negativity. +1 on the Pashnit site. Still a lot of stuff you don't have to pay to see. As far as I know, the entire LA Basin sucks. Go around, or bare it and get through it.
Drop a jingle here when you're out and about, somebody might be able to show you some interesting pavement along the way.

If you are in the area I live next to Hwy 9 and Skyline Blvd which leads to a place called Alice's Restaurant from there there are several way to have some twisty fun with the RT. Just make sure you bring a camera as you can hit the Coast and do a loop.

That I can almost guess.
I hate riding through my own city so I tend to track east, south and west to get around that vehicle stew. But hwy. 1 from San Diego is a must, and Yosemite and Golden gate are on my list so LA is inevitable sandwiched in the middle. Plus the only way to view ocean front property I think is not from Arizona thanks for the helpful banter.

Sorry no RT.
LT is the horse of choice. This is more of a sightseeing trip than looping around twisties. I have various points of interest in my ride through the southwest up the Pacific and back across the top but will keep that invite open, 'preciate it.

Highway 1 is not that interesting once you get south of Pismo Beach, which is well north of LA. It runs through towns as almost a surface street in many areas and can be really slow. I know because I had this dream several years back and once I got past Pismo it was much less interesting, and in places just a mess.

If you want to ride the part of 1 that is "The Spirit" of the Pacific Coast Highway. start in San Luis Obispo and stick to 1 all the way to Leggett. It's 475 miles of some of the best riding there is on the planet, both scenic and twisty-wise. You'll get the Golden Gate Bridge as well since 1 goes right over it. Allow 2-3 days to do it, as well, it's worth it.

A bridge to nowhere
So I'm visiting in the San Diego area point 'A' and my next stop is Big Sur point 'B'. Let me see if I follow you, skip hwy 1 and 101 skip LA. Yes I can swim but the LT does not so when is my best bet to bypass the traffic jam.
Thanks for the many points of enlightenment.

Someone from that neck of the woods may know better, but I'm guessing you should avoid the major freeways around San Diego and especially LA before 10:30 a.m. and after 2:30 p.m.
