He also gets a moron card. Obviously more interested in yammering for the camera than managing his ride.

With that logic, if you look at the back of a truck....that's where you'll go????

geez.....

I have to admit I've done the same thing except I was 15,
on a bicycle and looking at a girls ass.

Don't remember what kind of car I hit (it was parked)

but that sure was a nice ass.

Re: The sun does not have no prisoners - OUCH !!!

Interesting video, from the perspective that there is a lesson for us. Sorry the guy crunched his bike (and maybe his body).

It looks like the UPS truck applied his brakes when he was transitioning from sunlight to shade. Combine that with 2 tiny brake lights on the back of that truck, the rider not looking at the critical moment when the truck's brakes were applied, and the setting was one of those cases where sunlight cuts back and forth through trees, creating a "picket fence" effect, and the guy hits the truck. The #1 issue IMO was following too closely to the truck; #2 was not watching when the truck slowed down. Too late to brake; maybe he could have swerved right (not left!) around the truck. The MSF teaches that skill in their BRC.

Maybe UPS should consider Hyperlite or Skeene Design-style LED flashing brake lights. Cheap insurance, and very effective.

PS: Hans - I did that when I was kid. I was talking to a friend on the sidewalk and rode my bike into the back of a, uh, parked car. Ended up on the trunk, wondering what just happened...

Perfect storm.
Everything Howard mentioned came together at the same time . . . . following distance, paying attention, hard to notice brake lights against brown truck and the eye adjustment of going from shadow to light and back again. Most critical because it impedes your distance judgement. It happens to golfers all the time even on an easy make putt.
This fall on the BRP going through several tunnels I got a glimpse of that light /dark effect it could be unnerving.

Now why do we always blame our past indiscretions on the kid in us. Like going into a movie theater and rushing out into bright sunshine and bumping into a post or something that was there before you went in.
ride safe
