Many birds going west....

I came upon these birds today as I was driving south from Cottonwood, CA of highway 5 today. I could see them as they were against the solid white cloudy backdrop. They went on as far as I could see in both directions. They were going west. I didn't see them before or after this highway crossing area. I can only wonder how far they stretched out. A mile, 10 or maybe 100 miles?

All the groups made these really cool patterns in some kind of organized chaos. I could have watched them for hours.

They are most likely snow geese migrating.

I vote on sand cranes. Looks like their formation. When you see them you can hear their song.
