Thumbs up Doug - The Ride Continues

9/4
Traveled north from CCR to Burlngton, VT and picked Janet up at 6:45pm.
No hotel space in town due to State Fair and Labor Day weekend.
Proceeded 25 miles east to Waterbury and stayed at a Victorian B&B, The Old Stagecoach Inn, very nice.

9/5
Took Hwy 2 east across Vermont,New Hampshire and into Maine.
Ended up on Hwy 1A toward Bar Habor. Called ahead and no rooms due to Holiday weekend, so stopped in Elsworth at Comfort Inn and will visit Bar Harbor in the morning, then head north.
Cloudy and cool, 55 to 79 degrees. Skys are clearing, should be good riding next few days.,

Did you happen to stop at Trenton Bridge Lobster, on the road to Bar Harbor, one of my favorites?

Now that you have 50 states, are you going to ride home through Canada?

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

9/11

Yep, another year older today.
Rainy drizzle today so made a short 1 hour ride towards the Cabot Trail and stopped at the Glenora Inn (www.glenoradistillery.com) for the day.
Enjoyed live misic this afternoon, took a tour of the Distillery (with sampling), relaxed watching TV and now getting ready for dinner.
This is a great place to enjoy a rainy B-Day.
Our Room 9 overlooks the brook that runs thru the property and is used to make their Whisky (the Scott's do not put the "e" in Whiskey).
Weather is now clearing and should be good for tomorrows trip around the Cabot Trail.

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

Happy Birthday Doug. Looks like a nice place to visit and enjoy your day. And I just read this about the Cabot Trail:

"Most Scenic Drive. Best Island. Best Summer Escapes. World’s Greatest Road Trip. So many superlatives, so little time. This is Cape Breton’s Cabot Trail where breathtaking was invented. And no matter how long you’re able to stay, it can never be long enough.

Travel this magnificent highway carved into the edge of ancient highlands where eagles soar above you, seals splash below you and moose wander alongside and you’ll understand where all the acclaim comes from. From the enchanting Acadian village of Cheticamp where world-famous hooked rugs are handcrafted to the greens of famed Highland Links Golf Course to the 950 square kilometres of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, this is a vacation destination where wonderful is waiting around every bend in the road."

We WILL be requiring pictures.

I read similar reviews but frankly, compared to the California coast the Cabot Trail is a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Just my opinion and I'll admit I'm biased. Come see for yourself.

Thanks all for the B-Day acknowledgements but at this point I really need to stop counting..

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

9/12

Rode around Cape Breton on the Cabot Trail. Weather was overcast but did not impeed views and sun broke thru occassionally. Nice but not blindingly spectacular as some reviews make it sound. Nova Scotia is a small place and they have got to make the most of what they have and Cape Breton is their highlight.
Turned around near Meat Cove, my farthest point east from home at 6038 miles.
Headed back west an stayed the night in Sydney.

Meet Jeff Smith from Washington state at the Sidney hotel. Shared a pizza as we talked of our travels. He just got off the ferry after riding his 02 GSA up the Trans/Lab Hwy and down Newfoundland. On his way around the Cabot Trail and off to visit his daughter in Albany, NY on his way home. He also spent 7 months recently riding from Washington to Tera del Fuego, up to Buenos Aires, Argentia and air freighted himself and the bike home via Atlanta,Ga.
Good times and many beers to celebrate great rides.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9/13

Left Sydney and arrived at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site at 9:30 opening time. Stayed till 2:00pm visiting this reconsstructed 1744 French city staffed with actor docents who tell of what life was like then. Had an authentic lunch meal that was very good. Interesting place that Canada spent 25 million rebuilding 20% of the orgional buildings between 1961 and 1985. Worth the time to visit.
Back tonight in Port Hawkesbury. Tomorrow I will drop Janet off at Halifax Airport for 1:15pm flight home. Then I head west for home.

Being from the east and living in the west, I can say that everything out west is big, bigger or biggest. You guys out here are just spoiled rotton.

There's an old saying: "The (insert anything like 'The Cabot Trail' here) is beautiful, what there is of it. And enough of it too, such as it is."

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

9/15

Started off in a light rain for an hour this morning. Then sun and clouds mixed.
Seems to be road construction around every corner and traffic thu/around Quebec, Montreal and Ottawa was typical stop and go.
Speed limit is 100kph (62mph) so hard to make decent daily mileage.
580 miles today, stopped in Pembroke, Ontario.

I'd say about 4 or 5 at least! Ya know you're welcome any time Doug! Just give us at least 24 hours notice so we can move all the Silent Auction paraphernalia out of the spare room!

9/16

Awoke late and left hotel at 9:30 just as lite rain started.
Rained till 2:30pm which made for miserable riding conditions and cold at 48 degrees.
Made 480 miles today to Mackinaw City after crossing the Sault Ste Marie and Mackinaw Bridges.
Will recross the Mackinaw northbound in the morning and head west out the Wisconsin Upper Peninsula thru Duluth and Grand Rapids Minnesota towards Manitoba.

Had first mechanical glitch today when dash ABS display lights did their wig-wag display after braking for a turn. Stopped and shut bike off and system reset with no reoccurance and function seems normal (did couple aggressive test stops and worked perfect). Check of front brake fluid view window looks like fluid may be low. Checked lines and see no sign of leakage. I'll stop at first cycle shop I see and borrow some Dot 4.

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

9/17

While checking tire pressure this morning a fellow is admiring the LT and we make small talk, then he says I gotta go and drive my tractor over the bridge.
Turns out today was the 3rd Annual Mackinac Bridge Antique Tractor Crossing
He says last year they had 900 tractors so I went and took a look at the staging area downtown and there was a bunch taking up several blocks with Fire Dept and Police escorts.
Then stopped at the Harley Shop looking for brake fluid (no service dept at this store)
and meet a group of riders from Norway. They were guided by a local and were headed south for the "Tunnel of Trees" Heritage Route Hwy 119 south of Mackinaw City so I invited myself to tag along. Was worth the detour from my planned route, very scenic. Took several group pictures with their cameras for them. Invited them to California and CCR in Boise.
Reroad the Tunnel of Trees in the reverse direction going back north towards Mackinaw City and stopped at the famous "Legs Inn" restaurant (that's what the sign said).
Recrossed the Mackinaw Bridge and headed for the Shipwreck Museum above Paridise, Wisconsin at Whitefish Point. Learned 6000 ships have been lost on the Great Lakes, everyone knows of the Edmond Fitzgerald thanks to Gordon Lighfoot's song. Great Museum consisting of several restored buildings and a lighthouse.
Left there at 5:15 pm in search of motel and ended up in Newberry at 6:30 having traveled 200 miles but did not make much progress toward home.
Great day and no rain, mostly cloudy, 68 dergees.

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

918

Gained back 1 hour today.

Started out the day with a brakeline failure (front handlebar to front brake).
A & S was the only dealer with the part in stock. May have it shipped Monday to somewhere along my route or just continue home using the rear brake (will decide Monday).
Continued riding using only rear brake.
Went out to Copper Harbor at the end of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Lake Superior.
Ended up in Ironwood, Wisconsin after 400 miles.
Cool and clear, 52 degrees.

If I can help you with the brake line in any way, let me know...

Definitely replace the brake line, you know most of your stopping power is in the front brakes...

Just can not stand to park and wait for parts.
Yesterdays ride proved braking is dam good (did several panic practice stops), just had to retrain my right foot. I may actually still be getting some front brake as the 02 servo system is linked.
Checked dealers within 300 miles of my route and no brakeline in stock, can not order till Monday and some not till Tues (they are closed Mon). So soonest part is available from BMW is Tues/Wed.
A&S has part in stock but no shipping available till Mon so I could have part Tuesday (would have to figure out a ship to destination), but plan to be home by Thursday so what's the use?
Will ride conservativley (HA-HA) and see how today goes. Part is purchased and boxed and A&S is on standby to ship Monday upon my advising of destination.
Thanks for the offer.

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

9/19

Spent 3 hours this afternoon attempting a patch to the brake line. Managed to put a piece of tire patch with a hose clamp over cracked hose and slowed leak to drip so will continue to use rear brake only but should have fronts if needed in emergency.

Ended day in Bad River, ND after 479 miles.

Tomorrow will loop north into Manitoba and Saskatchewan before dropping south into Montana headed for Billings.

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

9/20

Today this ride offically became my longest at 30 days and 10000+ miles.
Should be home in 2 more days, GPS says 1150 miles from Billings, MT to Lodi.
Made up for time lost messing with front brake hose yesterday by starting out at 7:00am (still dark in North Dakota) and gaining 1 time zone back and pushing speed limit to make 800 miles today up thru Manitoba, over to Saskatchewan and down into Montana.
Lite rain till noon thru Canada and then ran thru the storm to finally see blue skies and 72 degrees.
Re-entered US at Raymond,MT and for first time ever at a border stop, he searched all compartments on the bike, even undid all the velcro compartments on the tank bag. He did forget to look in the RKA toprack bag sitting on top of the trunk but still I was happy to see him doing his job, not just counting how many times I blinked as he asks questions to determine if your telling the truth.
Then in the late afternoon while cruising at 82 mph in a 75 zone, radar dector took 2 pings and I slowed immediatly looking around for source. Then as I passed the car in front of me (divided 4 lane freeway) I noticed PATROL in big letters on the side. OOPS! He pulled right in behind with lights on. He advised I was overtaking him uphill at 82 mph in a 75 zone. I neither confirmed nor denied but truthfully said I slowed when I saw him but with suns glare I could not see my speed (honestly, I couldn't because when I disengaged cruise control I was trying to adjust to 75 but could not see so held a reduced speed I thought felt like 75 while I was looking around as I passed him). I think he slowed and was actually doing 75 as I passed but he was compelled to stop me and discuss the matter.
Let me off with a Written Warning and best wishes for a safe conclusion to my trip.
Then as I approached Billings I see a billboard for "Dave's Famous Ribs".
Well I ordered the Rib-N-Rib (1/2 rack babyback - 1/2 rack St Louis style, beans, potato salad, corn on the cob and cornbread. Washed down with a couple beers and all is good with the world.
So I am only 1 time zone and a couple days from the end of this trip.
Early to bed tonight, I'm to full to sit upright any longer.

Sounds like you need to believe that detector Doug! Glad to hear you are making progress and got by with just a warning buddy.

It sounds like you are looking at the more direct path home by now, and can't say I blame ya, but if you do wish to make the scenic ride, you know that offer still stands about the place to park it here in Hillsboro.

Lot of miles there Doug! Congrats on keeping her running.

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

Must be something with the border guys now, coming back from ontario last week I had the bike and trailer searched top to bottom. Maybe due to it being sept 11. Certainly not the most pleasant of border crossings, seems the guys have gotten really bad attitudes lately. A pity as this is the first thing you encounter when entering the U.S. Kind of gives you a bad taste in your mouth.

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying " I'll try again tomorrow".

Unsettleing to be treated as if you are concealing something or bring untruthfull, but mug shots prove you can not tell a crook by looking at him/her. Some are quite lovely (aka Paris & Lindsay).
Maybe you blinked wrong or hesitated at an answer.
Maybe YOU look like a crook???
Maybe they just got an ass chewing at that mornings pep talk for not finding enough contriband.
Whatever reason I vote we support their efforts and be glad they catch some of the not so desireable types.
We can just stay within our boarders and avoid the interaction/hassel or just be prepared for the delay.

BTW, my brother worked for the CIA and Homeland Security for 33 years and he always said they were looking for the people who did not appear suspect and appeared normal and trying to fit in.
I think that was a compliment as to your averageness.

Thanks for following my ride.

600 miles today to Wells, Nevada.
42 to 80 degree temperature swing, nice to be warm again.
Home tomorrow, only 550 miles.

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

9/22

Arrived at A & S just after 4:00pm after stopping in Sparks at Serria BMW for a look around. Then navigated traffic jamb leaving Reno, stopped at Emigrant Gap for a break and a few pics.
Roger stopped by and we marked my USA and Canada maps showing my 11000 mile route.
Then followed Ted to HDDC Dinner and home finally at 9:00.
Ride completed with minimal issues and no bike drops.
Great ride !
Thanks for following along.
Check back in a week or so for pictures.

Re: Doug - The Ride Continues

Glad to hear you made it back safely. Thanks for posting so those of us that are lame and can't take these epic trips can live vicaroiusly thru your exploits.

I hope to leave this weekend for a quick trip to visit relatives in Clarkston, WA, First real trip on the GS. It has only been 5 years since my last long trip. This work stuff really gets in the way.

Here is Doug in front of A&S after his 11,000 mile trip.

Glad you made it home safe and sound. Well, sound is a stretch but glad you're back.

Looks like he could do another 11000 miles. Not sure how the wife might feel. Welcome back.
