Thumbs up D2D - Doug to Dawson **UPDATED WITH PICS**

Finally ready to leave this morning,
Decided to make the first scheduled day of the trip a rest day.
How's that for trying to make this trip a "slow down and smell the roses" vacation.
Taking some back roads up to Lassen then wander up to Grand Coulee Dam before crossing into Canada.
Time to beat the heat and hit the road.

Good choice, I went to Grand Coulee Dam last year on my way to the Washington Rally. Nice way to go.

Have a good time, ride safe. I posted your pic to Dave Buchannan so he may recognize you when you get to Dawson.

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Figures that Lassen is snowed in and road thru parked is closed, really messed up my GPS Route..
Took 49, lunch in Downeville, 89 to 36 and down to Red Bluff. Was on fumes after 351 miles.

Saved a poor sole pushing his TW200 with a flat tire beside Lake Almanor. He asked if I would ride to next town and bring back a can of Fix-a-Flat. I said NO. After all I ride a GS and produced a can out of my left pannier. He was all smiles as it worked its majic and I gave him the "Pass It On" lecture when he offered to pay.

I was not going to use I-5 but decided I needed some fast miles so will go north to Hwy 97 turnoff then head northeast across Oregon.
Tonight in Dunsmuir.

Day 2: 500 miles
Cool and showers today.
Up I-5 to 97, then east on Silver Lake Rd thru Christmas Valley to 395,
North on 395 to Canyon City, then East on Hwy 7 to Baker City for tonight.
FYI - 395 north of Burns and Hwy 7 are fantastic.
Tomorrow thru Hells Canyon and over to Grand Coulee Dam, hope to cross into Canada late PM.

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Day 3

Headed to Hells Canyon only to find road is washed out and you can not complete the loop, would have had to backtrack and I hate that so decided it can'nt be as good as the Grand Canyon which I've seen several times so looked at the pics in the brochure.

Went to the "Oregon Trail" Interprative Center instead. Nice informative displays, worth the time. The actual real "Trail" is still visible from the Centers deck as it winds down the hills and out into the Valley.

Set GPS for shortest route to Grand Coulee and hit the freeway. Lite rain off and on all day. GPS routed some interesting two lane county roads to Coulee, excellent roads and wheat and alfafa to the horizion in all directions

Much water over the spillway (have not seen that in Calif. for years). It's a BIG dam (over a mile long) and has more concrete than Hoover.

Crossed boarder about 6:30 pm at Osoyoos and immediatly found the Best Western.

Lousy internet connection would not work earlier but does now, WTF???

Another 450 miles today and on schedule to be in Hyder, AK Saturday night.

Some motels limit the number of simultaneous connections, and you might have tried it when it was maxed out.

Sounds like a great trip so far, have fun!

Hi Doug,

Any problems at the border? Glad the weather got better in Prince George, the route you took to get there is fantastic, took the same one the first time to Alaska. Say Hi to the guys in Hyder for me. What no pics? No food reports? Just not like you....grin.

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Day 5 -460 miles

Slight detour to Prince Rupert just to say I been there.

Great weather.

Got to meet two very nice RCMP who made a special effort to hang a u-turn and attract my attention with a light show just for me so they could present me a certificate inviting me slow down or next time it's a ticket. What swell guys and I did.

Next I came upon a fatal accident that closed the road for 2 hours so got to PR later than planned. Looked like a pick-up crossed the double yellow and headon into a PT Cruiser, guy in PT lost and PU driver walked away w/o a scratch. Saw him walk to police cruiser and he did not look drunk. Looks like he tried to pass on a slight curve and didn't see PT.

Off to Hyder in the morning.

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Remind me not to follow you Bob. Your right about the wildlife, saw a Moose with calf, Bighorn Ram with a harem of Ewes and lambs and a Black Bear, all on the roadway.

Day 7 - 406 miles

Lite mist breaking to full sun as I left Hyder.
Nice ride untill the last 40 miles when it started to rain, then lightening/thunder and sections of hail that made the roadway white. Was affraid to stop as I feared feet might slip but felt no sliding of tires and pressed on to Watson Lake.

Wiil decide in the morning wether to take Ross Hwy #4 to Ross River or stay on the Alcan toward Whitehorse.

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Day 7 - 280 miles

Rain yesterday/overnight made going up the Ross Hyw 4 impossible, especially alone, so stayed on the Alcan to Whitehorse. Easy day, some lite rain in the morning.
Stopped at Signpost Forest and fouind Del's sign looking as good as new (thanks Nathan).

Arrived Whitehorse by 3:00 (Just Bob, the round-about paving is still the same) and got a room at the Stratford downtown on Jarvis St. (only place in town with outside doors).

Went to Yukon Honda to thank John for the help fixing Del's gas tank (loaned me tools) while he changed our tires in 07.

Dinner at Klondike BBQ with couple guys from Georgia who decided to follow me to D2D in Dawson tomorrow..

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Day 9 - 320 miles

Left Whitrhorse in a light rain and rain continued off and on all day.
Arrived Dawson 3:00pm.
Checked into Downtown Hotel and went ouit for luggage and Mike E. was walking across the street. He had come out the Dempster Hwy the day before and decided to camp and check out D2D.
Had a good lamb Gyro w/wine for dinner with a fellow from SF and another from Vancouver.
We then went to Gerties for the Dance Hall Show and talked till 1:00 am, went outside and sunlight still bright.
Headed out now to see what D2D has to offer, probably 40 bikes were parked in front of hotel lastnight.
Rain stopped about 5:00 yesterday and sky overcast but things drying out.
Weather supposed to be improving, hoping for clear skys for my Saturday ride to the Artic Circle.

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Day 10 - 0 miles

Walked around Dawson in the morning, weather is nice today.
Many bikes showing up today.
Spent the afternoon just sitting on Hotel patio having lunch, then move up and down mainstreet checking out bikes and talking to riders, except for that short side trip for icecream wafflecone and short nap..
Nice to just do nothing, well I did get load of laundry done.
Time to find dinner and probably go to Gerties again since ticket is good for 2 nights.

Doug,
Keep the stories coming and ride safe. How about some pics here and there. A bunch of us were hanging out in Eastern Oregon same time you came thru. Had I known we could have met for lunch or something.

Sorry but I'm a picture geek, can not get a decent internet connection to stay connected long enough to download, signal just drops in the middle of whatever you are doing.
Here, go to post #49, my bike is on the left parked across the street from Hotel.

Day 12 - 260 miles

Dawson to Eagle Planes Hotel on the Dempster Hwy.
What a difference 3 years makes, what took Del and I2 hours in the rain was a pleasant 5 hour ride today at 65 mph. The gravel/dirt road was smoother than the asphalt Hwy's I've been driving on.
Weather is supposed to stay sunny tomorrow (time willl tell) so will take Dell to the Artic Circle in the morning, exactly 3 years to the day of our 07 visit.

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Day 14 - 200 miles, 114 dirt/mud/gravel

Awoke to rain in Dawson, caught the Ferry across the Yukon River and proceeded on the Top of the World Hwy to the Alaska border and on to Chicken for 1:30 lunch. Rode with a young man Montana who was also traveling alone. I appreciated having someone to ride with over this section especially in the rain/mud. Max comfortable speed for me with Tourances aired down to 25 psi was 45mph with many areas down to 20.
Rained the entire day with zero visibility (white out) in several streches where road elevated into the clouds. Not a fun ride but no issues, just wet around the edges.
Pavement started again 5 miles past Chicken and I stopped for the day in Tok at 4:30.
Montana rider continued North toward Delta Junction.
Forcast is not favorable for entire week, will probably not cross the Denali Hwy but just head south toward home and see if I can outrun the rain.

Day 15 - 468 miles

Awoke to more rain so decided to head south instead of west to Denali.
Ran thru the rain in about 1 hr and found sun by noon.
Headed to Haines and the Hwy down was amazing, reminded me of the Alps.
Dinner in Haines and caught the 8:30 Ferry to Skagway. Phoned ahead for a room and checked into Sgt. Preston Hotel. Several cruise ships in harbor, looks to be the perfect tourist trap town.

Day 16 - 480 miles

More rain this morning.
I think the scenery comming out of Skagway is amazing but I would not know, lousy visibilty in rain/fog.
Out ran the rain by noon but was wet/cold so stopped at the Continental Divide Cafe and camped by the wood stove for an hour while I had lunch.
Staying tonight in Dease Lake comming down the Cassier Hwy.
Clouds look nasty, expect the rain to catch up and another wet beginning tomorrow.

Day 18 - 610 miles

Made Fife, Wa. after crossing at Sumas.
Rained last 10 miles to hotel.
Will go to Southsound BMW just down the street in the morning to see if they can replace my rear tire. Just barely a visable tread in the center., can probably make Portland if need be.
Will probably ride thru to home tomorrow if tire does not take to long.

I am glad you made it back to the lower 48, You should have called me last night. You could have stayed at my floating casita. I am only 4 miles from south Sound. I have a tire changer too. Call me if you need it.

... and down here in Portland too. If you need someone to check for a tire and pick it up for you I can get that done. Got a tire changer and balancer at your disposal.

Doug, we had hoped to maybe catch you at the Fife BMW dealer, but were obviously way too late! Hopefully by the time you read this you'll be sipping on some vino or a brewski at your casa!

Re: D2D - Doug to Dawson

Day 19 - 802 miles Fife, Wa. to home.
Thanks for the offers guys, hard to determine how far I was going to get each day so just rode till done. Thought tire would make entire trip but by the border it was looking smooth.
Southsound BMW sure is a nice dealership and got me on the road by 10:30 and I was home a 9:35pm. Sorry I missed you, thanks for the effort, hope you enjoyed the donuts..

Trip completed without mechanical issues, bike drops, broken bones and no performance awards (well there was that Canadian written proclamation to slow down).
Meet several great people to ride along with and share room costs.
Too bad the weather was not behaving but probably will be very nice up there this week.

Thanks for following along.
