Sequoia & King Canyon

I am planning a ride through these parks on June 1. The planned approach into Sequoia is from the southeast on the Kern River Hwy onto Mtn Hwys 99/50, County Rd 107 onto Hwy 190, then approach Kings Canyon on Hwy 198 onto Generals Hwy/Hwy 180 emerging out at Dunlap, from where I will then proceed to Yosemite.

Can anyone provide me with local knowledge as to whether, under normal seasonal conditions, I could expect these roads to be open for such a route? Thanks. Jamie

Should all be open by June 1st, lots to see plan a few days. Be sure and go all the way to the back of Kings Canyon, it's a great ride.

When you come through Springville on hwy 190. Give us a call 559-539-2072 for more immediate local knowledge, or a least for a cool beverage by the river.

Hi,

I'm also planning a west coast trip that week to check off Calif and Arizona ... once done my LT will have touched all 48 (lower) states

Current route includes 395, Tioga Pass, Yosemite, then 180, Generals Highway, 198, and 190. Any concern that Tioga Pass won't be open by June 1?

Tioga pass is right at 10,000 feet, and the park service isn't concerned about keeping the road open. Passage through it is totally weather dependent and as far as I know, it was closed once as late as July 4th. You shouldn't worry though. In all probability, it will be open. If not, there are plenty of other lower elevation passes and 3 other park entrances.

Keep an eye here http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm

They will update when open but it's still snowing up there right now, it would surprise me if it does open by June 1st this year.

Doubtful Tioga will be open before July.

Additionally, I would not presume Hwy 4 or 108 will be open over their summits by June 1st as alternates. I would not plan on Tioga being open until mid-June at the earliest. Tioga has registered over 600 inches of snow this season. Hwy 88 is maintained year round as is Hwy 178 as options.
