My latest road trip across the US again

In a 1995 Chevy Turbo Diesel long bed with shell, pulling an 8x12 flatbed trailer (Ted's), my brother and I left Sacramento on Monday the 13th at 11:30 am and got to Dover, ME at 9:00 pm Friday night. 105 hours. 3280 miles. 13 fill ups. 4 motels. 650 mile days. The trailer was wide. Some lanes across the US are not very wide. First toll was at mile 2635 in Ohio. 9 more toll stops totaling 37.60. Never used the windshield wipers once. Rained all night the night I got home. Some of the boxes got wet. Took the trailer to a neighbors barn the next day.

It was a lot harder driving with the heavy trailer and heavily packed truck than we thought. We were sleep deprived the whole trip. It was more like work but it all went as planned. I can sure pick em I guess as the old pickup I bought and the trailer performed well and had no problems. I had imagined at least a hundred things that could have gone wrong.

The mileage was a consistant 11 miles per gallon no matter what we did. Up the Sierra's and Rockies or just flat upper plains. Even back east city driving. Now that I took the trailer off and emptied the truck, it's getting 16 around town now.

I didn't do much this last weekend except maybe watch that old guy play golf, but today I found an apartment. It's right in town over our friends gift shop. She's a decorator and wants to re-paper and paint before I move in Aug 1st. A large 2 bedroom unit furnished with antiques for $300. Elec, heat, DSL and Cable will be under $600.

I guess that's about it. I'm going to get working on the planned cabins and garage for now. That will keep me busy. And helping around this old house. Even the lawn here is 2 acres so there's always outside work to do.

And, I'm taking my bike in tomorrow to get new mufflers, tires, wiring fixed and all fluids. I'm going to trade the shell of my truck for a plow. I want the open bed for towing my vintage Honda. There's a vintage bike show down south somewhere soon and I can get in for free. I don't feel as secure driving the old bike as far as I would if it was newer. Now I get the towing thing. Don't hate.

I'll do pictures later. Me and my bro took a bunch. I'll show you my setup and pack job.

Here's a picture of the truck and trailer taken in the Boomtown parking lot, our second stop to check the tarp and pack job.

Hated to see go. Good luck with your new business. Hope to get to right coast and rent one of your cabins someday.

The rack on top of the shell is costing you 2 mpg (amazing how much air resistance a couple of tube steel pipes can generate).

Glad the trip went well, look forward to seeing you in the future.

Keep us posted on progress of the HDDC cabin?
