Talking Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Hey gang, if you would like to see a couple of familiar mug shots check out the attached thread from the North west Forum (scroll down to the last two posts for the pics):
http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46508

Mike was not able to attend, but we sure had a great time listening to the stories that Doug & Bob have already accumulated on this first segment of their great trip!

Smile Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Great pictures John, we had a great time, a perfect ending to a great ride to Portland and the company was even better. Today we went to Touratech in Seattle (Bit of Rain), were photographed, asked for our autographs and will soon be a part of the New Touratech Travelers website. Then on to Riders West, the BMW dealer in Seattle (More Rain). Doug tried to find a heated Jacket, no luck. Then on to Everette (Lots more Rain) for the night, Mike was meeting someone for dinner, but thay backed out. Plan is to get to Prince Goerge BC by tomorrow night 520 miles. Hope for no Rain...grin. Will post some pictures later.

Talking Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Yeah, it is the great North Wet! We have had steady rain down here since about 10:00 this morning and it has not really let up yet! We were hoping maybe you guys were able to ride out ahead of it, but it sounds like you may have ridden into more of it instead!

But you guys have the gear for it, and it just makes that nice warm motel room that much nicer at the end of the day!

Ride safe gang! And we'll watch for you on the return trip.

Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Collision on the Cassiar Hyw.

Sorry to report the trip ended Sat. afternoon about 40 miles north of the Hyder turn off at the Bell 2 Lodge parking lot entrance on Hwy 37.

Bob braked aggressivly and was struck by third bike in line after barely missing middle bike (me). Impact sent both riders and debri flying. Both are reasonably Ok thanks to ATGATT and LUCK. Bob is sore all over from tumble and Mike has a seperated right shoulder as diagnosed at Stewart Hospital. Big Thank You to Micheal (the lodge manager) for driving them round trip to Stewart. Nicer folks you'll never meet. Flatbed transport was arranged by Bob for both bikes and both riders rode with driver back to Smithers arriving 2:30am. I stayed at the lodge overnight and returned to Smithers meeting up about 3:00pm. Both are in good spirits but dissapointed and are flying to Vancouver Monday morning and will meet bikes at the BMW dealer when the flatbed arrives Tuesday afternoon from Smithers. I think Bob's can be fixed but Mike's might be a total. He has already picked out a replacement and credit is pre-approved.
They plan to recover their gear and fly home and both vow to eventually return and finish the trip.

Since I already had the privledge of visitng Alaska and the fact winter is late leaving (still 2 ft of snow at Bell 2 Lodge) and I do not like the Cold or to ride alone, I decided to turn around. I am in Prince George tonight and will ride to Vancouver via Hwys 97 & 99 thru Whistler. Then may visit Vancouver Island and return home down the coast if weather co-operates.

Sorry for negative post, but these things happen as life is a continous learning experience and that which does not kill you makes you wiser.

Bummer gang! We sure hope everyone heals up from the separation and bruises soon. With Mike already picking out his next Bike it sounds like he is still in a pretty good state of mind at least, if not body.

Doug, take a ferry over to Victoria BC and tour the island for a day. Very cool, and check out the Bouschart Gardens.

Cool Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Well folks, we made it to Rainy Vancouver, have scoped out where the BMW dealer, where the bikes are going to be delivered to tomorrow. Contacted Marine Hiway to cancel ferries. Contacted insurance claim adjusters(Oh Fun), Mike is going to the Hot Tub to ease his shoulder. Still have to contact Wasilla to deal with tires and othe sundries shipped there to hold for us. All in all, trying to make most of this situation. Gear will go back home by way of my Dad, who is driving up to Vancouver for a Anniversary celebration. Folks in Smithers (Al'sTowing Company, Brian, Marge,Kyle and Nephew Brady) Had us over for a great BBQ, we then went to Aspen Lodge for drinks and general merriment (Closed the place) Brian was kind enough to pick us up at Hotel and take us to the Airport this morning at 7 am, Even after what happened last night...I know, I know....you want pictures!!!! I Will post a link here soon with all the incriminating antics of our merry little group. Doug is somewhere between Prince George and Vancouver at this point. Hopefully we can get together before we head south to home, sweet home.

Bob.

Damn Bob
I know how you enjoy food and merriment but this is not the way to do it, do you understand this last statement? I'm just glad you guys are OK cause the bikes can be taken care of..thats why we have insurance. Hope to see you soon.

Bob -

I spoke with you in Cambria Saturday night at the bar about "robin poof" and "Bob poof" - and still can't believe what I am reading here!

Like others, was really looking forward to read about your adventures - just glad that everyone isn't hurt seriously. Good luck with getting everything back to normal!

Hey Bob, I'm in Anchorage for another day, just got here this afternoon on business. Is there anything I could do to assist with the tires in Wasilla? Just checking in case it might help in the long involved process to have someone up here.

I do not think either realize how WILD this was. Bob said he was on the bike and then regained his senses lying on the ground. Mike and his bike ended up in an 8 foot deep drainage ditch in 1 foot of water (bike had to be lifted out with a backhoe).

All this happened 10 feet in front of me, incrediable noise on impact (loud even with helmet on, earplugs in and I-Pod playing), parts went flying and bodies were tumbling.

Several people were 100 feet away in front of the Lodge looking right at us as we aproached and ran to assist, arriving to both riders before I could park and remove my gear.
Both showed signs of shock immediatly after accident but I was shaking more then either.
Not fun to witness.

Red face Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Scott, it looks like I may own the Oops here! I saw in Doug's earlier post that he said they were somwhere near Hyder. But they were still on the Cassier Hwy which most certainly is BC! I am attaching a map of the Hwy (Hwy 37) which they would have been on when things went bad:
http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/popular-topi...7/hwy37map.htm

So I stand corrected buddy. Your original post was correct!

Hey guys, I am really sorry to hear about the crash. What a lousy way to end what sounded like a great trip. I'm glad everyone is OK (well sort of). See you guys at an HDDC after your return. Hey Doug, be safe and have a great ride.....

Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Came over the mtns west bound from Cashe Creek via Hwy 99. Heavy rain west of Whistler and snow on the pass.

Met up with guys at Vancouver BMW about 4:15pm and insurance adjuster showed up a few minutes later.

Bob and Mike are flying home in the morning to await insurance co's reports.

I plan to visit Vancouver Island for a couple days, but that might change by morning.
Should be home by Sunday. Glad to hear it's cooled off some.

Bob and Mike:

I'm sorry to hear that your trip ended abruptly. Especially for Bob since this is the second year in a row.

Glad the damage to self was minimal considering the description of the impact.

Cool Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Hi guys, just got back home, had a direct flight to SF and BART to Pleasanton which was cheaper then Mikes flight to Sac, and didn't involve a layover in Phoenix...grin. Also came home to some good news, Mike's insurance is accepting 100% Liability and will be repairing my bike. Now I need to find all the reciepts for the custom stuff I have done, and where I got them from. Miss my bike already...;( but am glad to be home to recuperate. I am sure Mike is looking forward to the same.

Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Glad you got home in time for Terri's B-Day Bob. Happy B-Day Terri !!!!!!

I caught the 9:20am ferry north up the "Sunshine Coast" and made it to the end of the pavement above Powell River about 2:00pm. Checked out a few side roads, had late lunch while waiting for the 4:45pm ferry to Vancouver Island.

Arrived on V.I.(Comox) at 6::15pm and headed for Port Hardy at the north end.
WOW what beautiful scenery to ride thru even tho there were a few rain showers..
The road surface and banking is perfect for spirited progress (only saw 1 deer and a black bear) and zero traffic. Supposed to take 3 1/2 hours but I cooked right along and arrived Port Hardy at 9:00pm just as the sun went down. In the morning I will proceed north to find the end of the pavement and then turn around and head south toward home.

Looking forward to re-riding the route slower to enjoy the views as high pressure is moving in and should chase away the clouds.

Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Perfect day, made to Tofino on the Pacific side. The road over is 100 mile combination of Sonora Pass and Big Sur.
Staying here tonight http://www.tinwis.com/ Not bad for a Best Western.Looking at the beach from my room.
Plan to be off the Island tomorrow afternoon, headed south down the good old USA coast.

Thumbs up Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Your a good bro Chuck, had I know I could have skipped Vancouver Island tour and stopped by to help, I stayed at the Best Western in north Portland last night.

Got home about 6:00pm just now.

Not bad if I don't say, Tofino, Vancouver Island to Lockeford. Ca. in 34 hours, including dealing with the Black Ball Ferry from Victoria to Port Angles and a good nights sleep on the way.

Vancouver Island is worth the time and hassel of getting there, at least the north half.
Must have Corona now.
Trip over!

To Doug, Bob and MIKE'S Alaska Trip, I'm delighted that you all made it home safe without any serious damage or decay.

Doug, your time was pretty good considering the rain. You're the relentless one. But, how does it feel to be home and not in the saddle? Are you ready to go again this am? I know Bob and Mike probably are.

Wink Re: Doug & Bob's Alaska Trip

Thanks all.
Did not miss riding today and have not even unloaded the bike yet.
Kind of nice to just sit still awhile after 12 days on the road.
Roger, once I got thru Whistler last Tuesday, high pressure started moving in and except for some drizzle on Vancouver Island Wednesday evening on the way to Port Hardy, the weather was perfect.
Spent the day watching the Indy 500 and catching up on "Cops" episodes. Where can I get a Tazer??
