Wanna Black Car?

Apparently you won't be getting one in California if this all goes as planned:

Thumbs down Re: Wanna Black Car?

I went to a local CARB meeting in Livermore, where they wanted community input on proposed fireplace rules, guess what, no matter what anyone brought up, it was denied. Even those with catalytic converters on their fireplaces were to be penalized under the spare the air days. Someone asked about gas fireplace inserts where you use the chimney for the exhaust, and was told, since they can not determine what was coming out of the chimney, they would be cited also and they would have to appeal the fine which would take two visits to CARB, one to file for the appeal, second to get a ruling. Their view was that people walking down the sidewalk in neighborhoods where fireplaces were burning wood constituted a health hazard. What next?

Re: Wanna Black Car?

According to the KCRA website this has been shelved by CARB at least until the year 2015. Apparently a lot of people thought they were out to ban black cars altogether and were inundating them with phone calls and emails, so it sounds like they may have wised up (a bit) and postponed the idea.

Wanna 'splain this to me?

From the second article that Scott linked...

The state said consumers should be aware that when it comes to car colors, choosing the right color does make a difference. For example, buying a white car instead of a black car saves about 2 to 3 miles per gallon.

I would love to see the study that proves this. I almost want to send this in to Mythbusters, just to have them piss in CARB's Cheerios.

Like pulling 200K cars off the road??? Save 2-3 miles per gallon? WOW.

Between a white car and those fuel additive beads that some guy on Craigslist wants to sell, I should get 6 extra miles to the gallon...

I don't know which PO's me more.....

The fact that we are actually paying big money to the idiots that sit around in Sacramento and think this kind of crap up, or that our fellow riders from all over the country are all over this. I shudder to think what they think of our intelligence level for living here with all these eco-nazi's.

Did anyone happen to catch the interview with the pencil-neck on this morning's news? He actually said that there is a "significant" difference in the cost of operating AC in a black vs. white car. They didn't show his feet, but I'm sure he was wearing sandals with green socks............

Don't you just love the numbers these people come up with straight out of their ass? Where are these cars? China?

They probably used the same "science" used to "validate" global warming, uh I mean, global cooling, uh, hmmm, yeah "climate change." It's all a bunch of unsubstantiated horseshit that's costing all of us tons of money and freedom.

Re: Wanna Black Car?

I was looking for a link to verify this, but can not find one. That means you have to take my word...

I worked for a car maker for many years. At one point we had a request from dealers to beef up the AC system on black cars since they would just not cool down enough.

Some engineers got into an argument about this and did a -granted, not totaly scientific- study.

We put black and white cars in the sun in a Florida parking lot with a recording device that recorded interior temperatures at various places inside the cars.

Result?

The black cars heated up faster, but after about 30 minutes the temperatures started to even out. After about an hour there was no difference between the black and white cars. The explanation I was given is that the heat enters mainly thru the glass.

Conclusion: If you want to keep your car cooler work with the glass, not the paint color. And btw, the cheap common window tint does only help marginally. The better kind that comes under various name such as "ceramic" does make some difference. Some car companies offer insulating glass. Expensive but effective.

Re: Wanna Black Car?

Heres a question, unless you have an auto climate control, how many air conditioners work any differnt once you set the control??? Uhhh, i set my ac on high or low, the AC doesnt know the difference of how hard its going to work becasue thats determined by the controls, not the temperature.....

Re: Wanna Black Car?

And I heard that it's all a hoax ( likely once they started getting mail-they called it a hoax)

and what helps with global warming is not reflecting heat its absorbing heat like Black

The heat reflected back into the atmosphere is what hurts. ( if you believe in GW now called climate change)
