Thoughts on route from bay to Sunriver, OR

I've got 2 days to get from Mountain View up to Sunriver, OR, with a required stop in Redding on the way. My wife and daughter are driving the car, we'll stay together on the way. She's taking the quick route, up 5 and 97. (511 miles total.)

Here's an outline of the route I'm considering, which is considerably more interesting (I hope): http://tinyurl.com/57hq8l

Any suggestions, comments?

Looks like a great ride, doable in one day easy.

I should clarify: the stop in Redding is overnight. Wife doesn't want to drive with daughter for 10 hours straight. So I'll be leaving Mountain View on Friday afternoon, staying in Redding Friday night, and then doing the rest of the ride to Sunriver on Saturday. I have more time to explore on Saturday, and I know a lot less about Southern/Eastern OR, so tips or other feedback on that segment would be greatly appreciated.

Bob,
I have always wanted to take the road from Garberville to Mad river. I have heard conflicting stories about whether it is paved or not. Is it paved? And how nice of a road is it? Looks pretty good on the map.
I would recommend detouring to Crater lake but the weather up here has been cold for this time of year. So its still probably snowed in.

Good question! I just dragged out the route using Google Maps. I sort of assumed it would only show paved roads on the map, but there's no legend. If you zoom way in using the satellite view you can sort of make out what looks like a dotted white line down the middle of the road, which is promising.

I've never been that way myself, I've been along 36 though, which is a good road. I've been on some dirt and gravel roads on the K1200GT before, but it's not something I want to do a lot of.
