Starter Problem

I think I have a starter problem but am not sure if its the relay or the starter itself. Sypmtoms began when electrical work was done on the bike (installing power patch for farkles). I used a keyed source i.e. tailights, to make the connection. After getting it back together again I try to start it and it does it start but it sounds like the starter didn't disengage immediately and took a few seconds. This happened 3 times. On the fourth start the battery went dead. Any ideas on where I can start. I began a 10 vacation today and it would be a shame if I cant at least get a little ride in..........

Thanks for your help,

Mark

Re: Starter Problem

This is a typical LT thing, when battery gets weak and you try to start it, starter relay sticks on.

Not sure about RT, but this is a maybe fix on the LT:
Disconnect and charge up the battery (probably got weak while doing your farkles).
If starter sticks on when you reattach the cables, tap the starter button hoping it unsticks, if not replace relay.

Re: Starter Problem

I just did what Doug said...last week tried to start bike and it was no go. charged up the battery and when I tried to hook up the cables back on it was arc time and starter just started on its own. put on my glasses..gloves turned on the key touched the cables again and bike started then i hit the start button...all good.

Re: Starter Problem

thanks very much Doug and Nelson....I knew there had to be an easy answer for this since I wasnt having starter problems before I started messing with the electrical system. Its on the charger now so we'll if I need a new relay. Thanks again.
