Half of the total Dakar distance was planned for Mauritania. I don't think they really had a choice but to made a decision based on the safety of all concerned. I can't imagine what the privateers must feel at this late a date... At least Dakar officials say the 2009 event will proceed.

They say this now, but if the terrorist organizations see this as a big victory (not sure it is for them, only a relatively small number of people overall really follow the Dakar) then it is very likely they will perform their acts again next year. They may be proud that they stopped one, I imagine they will be ecstatic it they stop it altogether.

I sure hope it does not stop, I really looked forward to this every year, even though TV coverage has suffered since the Outdoor/Versus group took over coverage from SpeedVision.

If it is stopped again next year, there is a good chance no teams will pony up the time and money to prepare again, so the Dakar could become just memories of the past. Sad indeed. If I had put hundreds of thousands of dollars into preparing for this year, I would have to think long and hard before repeating it for 2009 knowing that it could again be cancelled at the last minute.

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work...I want to achieve it through not dying.

This sucks big time.
To wait until 12 hours prior to an event and then make a decision to cancel due to something that happened 30 days ago (killing of 4 French citizens) by guys that are now in custody seems misguided.
I am sure others jumped in and made additional threats just to take advantage of situation but to react this way seems wrong (easy for me to say since I am only a spectator).

Some options that come to mind are:
1. Proceed as planned after divulging all info and threats to participants.
2. Shorten event skipping areas of concern.
3. Find somewhere in the middle of nowhere to just go around in circles for 21 days.

Only one who wins is Robbie Gordon as his equipment is adrift at sea and he was pretty much screwed.

Will be interesting to get "THE REST OF THE STORY" someday as I am sure there is much more to this.

It looks like there may be an alternative this summer - from the Chinese, no less:

http://www.transorientale.com/

Starts in St. Petersburg and runs across Russia, Kazakhstan, and China to end up in Beijing. Could be interesting.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

ez to spot al qaida

It should be easy to spot the al qaida dudes at Dakar, they're the ones driving the humvees with Saudi license plates.
why oh why would AQ want to disrupt a race? they must be getting bored. I mean if they want to disrupt a sporting event, why not the Pro Bowl, it's pretty useless, or the MLB All Star game, also useless.

I picked this up from an online newsletter:

Quote:
DEBKAfile Exclusive: Five al Qaeda suspects in Mauritania admit Dakar Rally targeted
4 Jan.: Hundreds of crews gathered in Lisbon heard at the last minute Friday that the organizers, the Amaury Sport Organization, had called off the challenging 9,000-mile Dakar Rally for the first time over terror threats. Five suspects were detained by Mauritanian intelligence over the murders of a French family of four on Dec. 24 and three soldiers.

DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources report that those suspects disclosed to interrogators in Nouakchott that Al Qaeda’s next target was to be the Dakar Rally.
The jihadist group, they said, had deployed terrorist teams in a wide net across the Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal, poised to kill rally participants and take hostages.

In 2004, several stages of the Dakar Rally were called off by terror threats in Mali - but never has al Qaeda managed to force the cancellation of an entire major sporting event. Al Qaeda’s No. 2, Ayman Zawahiri, who directs the movement’s Maghreb branch, is responsible for this “success.” It has aroused fears in international sporting circles that al Qaeda will now try and force the cancellation of the 2008 Beijing Olympics by intimidation.
