Thumbs up Fort Bragg Ride is On!! October 13-14

The Ride to Fort Bragg (CA, since I get that question every year ) is go! I'm putting the last details together for everything, but enough is set up to get things rolling. So let's do it!

Dates:

October 13 - 14, 2007

Hotel:

Mariah Country Inn (Formerly the Chelsea Inn and Suites, formerly the Fort Bragg Motel, regardless, it's the same place as last year, but remodeled a bit)
763 N Main St
Fort Bragg, CA 95437
707-964-4787

We have a block of 31 rooms, including -

17 - 2 double beds ($73)
11 - 1 King bed ($60)
3 - 2 bedroom suites with a sitting area ($100)

Reservations can be made starting today. Tell the desk agent you are with the David Taylor Party to get this rate. The cutoff for getting rooms in our block at this rate is September 22.

Lunch:

Tony's Seafood Restaurant
18863 Highway 1
Marshall, CA;
415-663-1107

We'll meet here for lunch at 11:30 a.m. They will open early to seat us so we don't have to wrestle with the regular lunch crowd.

Dinner:

North Coast Brewery Tap Room, 6:30 p.m.

I am working with them on our dinner menu and will update everyone on that once it's finalized. The requested we do a special menu this instead of ordering off the house menu so they can insure they have enough of the items on hand and can prepare and serve the group at roughly the same time instead of the delays some folks have experienced in the past. Don't worry, you can drink any of the beer they have on tap, all the time.

The Ride There:

As usual we keep it kind of loose. I've taken a group from San Jose BMW to Tony's for lunch the last few years, and will do so again this year. We'll meet at the shop at 9 a.m. and leave at 9:15 a.m., taking freeway to San Francisco and over the Golden Gate Bridge, then going a more scenic route once north of SF.

Folks from the Sacramento area tend to gather and ride together, so watch for info on that. Also, some folks just like to do it their way and meet us there. It doesn't really matter which one you choose, as long as you come along and have some fun with us!

After lunch everyone basically does their own thing for the ride to Fort Bragg. It's not hard to get there from Tony's; just follow Highway 1 until you get to Fort Bragg. The Motel is on the north end of town and the restaurant is walking distance (OK, staggering for some ) from there.

Just remember, everyone should ride their own ride, even if traveling with a group of folks for parts of this. Don't ride over your head or take silly risks. The point is to have a good time and enjoy hanging out with a bunch of friends, old and new!

The Ride Home:

Everyone pretty much does their own thing.

That's the scoop on things for now. I'll start a list on this thread, and please add your name (and your SO if coming) to it so I can give the restaurants a final headcount as we get closer to the weekend. We've had a lot of fun on this ride every year (even when I've totaled a bike on it ), and I'm guessing we'll have as much fun if not more this year! So sign up soon and let's get ready to ride!

I hope to see you all there!!

It's a running headcount. When someone signs up wth an SO or buddy you count 2 spots.

Or, what Gilles said, although that proves he really needs to get a hobby or something.

Hi All,

I tried prolonging as late as possible, but it looks like I won't be able to make it this year. Ya'll have a good ride and good time there in Ft. Bragg. And if I can 'persuate' either Raffy or John to console my friend Rasputin for me, that'd be appreciated. I'll gladly reciprocate for ya'll at the next get-together.

Woo-hoo! Rasputin here we come!!!
Kathy and I will leave L.A. on Friday early afternoon and ride North, just a bit shy of San Jose to spend the night and meet up on Saturday at the dealership.
We'll take Sunday and Monday to leisurely ride home...!

Kathy and I will leave L.A. on Friday early afternoon and ride North, just a bit shy of San Jose to spend the night and meet up on Saturday at the dealership.
We'll take Sunday and Monday to leisurely ride home...!
Great! Glad you're joining us there. I'll probably get a few folks together with ElJeffe for dinner Friday night in or near San Jose. I'll keep you posted on plans, assuming having another meal with us won't put you two over the edge.

Just got back from Manchester Beach ride, Had a great time, went to a couple of places I just have to take Terri to, so we will be driving up to Ft. Bragg instead of riding.

So if anyone needs a ride or gear taken up there, let me know and we can make arrangements to meet.

We will meet everyone at Tony's of course for lunch and then take a leisurely drive up.

Taking the Ridgeline, so plenty of room.

Thanks to everyone who came, it was a great time! I'll try to get my pics up in the next day or so before I take off for Arkansas (Mom's 80th birthday).

We had a cold and damp, but still fun, ride home down the coast until we went inland at Olema. Only one minor mishap; a moron in a motorhome came to a dead stop going uphill on 1, Nick (riding my LT) stopped behind all the cars stuck behind him but was off center on the off camber uphill slope and tipped over onto the right side. He pulled a leg muscle but is doing fine (rode home and iced it, says it's feeling better), Candace was completely unscathed, and the bike has a few scratches on the tipover parts and a lovely J-Pegs hole in the lower fairing.

David,
Thanks again for setting up everything again. Great job. I had such a blast ridin the Ca. twisties even though I had to do hwy 36 in the rain. I apoligize for my quick exit after dinner. I was not feeling good at all. I was asleep in about 2 minutes and felt somewhat better in the morning. I was pretty rough leaving in the am,6:30am that is. It took about 30 minutes of twisties going up hwy 1 and I was cured. I road for an hour and a half before I encountered my FIRST CAR in my lane. Unbelieveable! I saw a herd of elk (40-50) just north of Eureka, Then a smaller herd of 8. Then I saw a real big boy hanging out in some ones front yard. How would you like to wake up to that?
John, Thanks for the tour of the lost coast on Sat. I really enjoyed it, Especially the mountain lion! When I reached I-5 at grants pass I knew the fun was over. I ended up with about 800 miles of slab and 1100 miles of twisties. Next time it will be all secondary roads and twisties.

Thanks for coming down! It's always great to have you there, you've become somewhat of a fixture for this event. I'm glad you're feeling better, too. I was sick most of last week and at one point thought I would have to bail on my own ride! Luckily drugs and pure hard-headedness won out.

Scary stuff. Need to put 100-150 lbs of weight to act like a ballast to keep it from coming up.

Raffy,

For the Ural, the best stuff I found for ballast was lead shot. Got some spent stuff at a recycled metals place. A 25lb bag is about half the size of a roll of paper towels. It came in a canvas bag so it doesn't scratch up the interior and is easy to stow. Easy to remove when you have "live" ballast in the chair. Cheap.

I have 160 lbs of steal shot that I use in my wakeboard boat. You're welcome to use it until spring time. It's four 40lb bars with handles that are rhino lined. Very clean..

Thanks.

I did have an oh chit moment. Uphill 20 mph right hand curve and I was doing maybe 15 in second when the car came up. i backed off the throttle and it came back down. then i gave it some gas to get going again and it came up again. the second rime was scary because I ended up headed slightly straight. Backed off again and completed the turn.

Thank you David for organizing the ride.

We rode back in 2 days, hitting as many secondary roads as possible, and got home arond 7:00 pm tonight. Traffic was scarse, which made for a great ride both days.

Sorry to hear about Nick's mishaps.

Also I feel so sad for Ted who had to attend the A&S open house... Maybe next year we can help!
