Exclamation MESSENGER13 NEEDS HELP! Joe Broken Down Near Reno, NV

Joe just called me and the rear drive appears to have failed on his GT. He is in the process of getting towed from Lovelock, NV back to the dealership in the Reno/Sparks, NV area so he can get them started on things as early as possible tomorrow. If someone lives in the area and can direct him to a hotel/motel near the dealership, or maybe meet him and help him get situated once he gets to Sparks, he would greatly appreciate it. If you can help out please call him on his cell phone -

440-759-8235

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

Just called Joe and gave him what information I know on Sierra BMW and the local Hotels. He's in good spirits, still waiting on the tow.
HE could use a local up there if any of the Reno Sparks members are on line.

Somebody go get him/bike in Reno tonight, go to dinner/gamble awhile and bring him back to A & S so he can go to HDDC dinner Wed.

Totally his fault, told him to stop in Lodi for some good wine.

Regardless, situation SUCKS. Hope they can get him on the road quickly cause I know he is missing those back home.

Thumbs up

Just talked to Joe and he is .07 miles from Serria BMW in Sparks at a Super 8. He was not able to talk to Serria to see if they have parts, but his dealer in Ohio does and can overnight if required.
Said he was moving rather briskly just prior to stopping for gas and noticed things did not roll so well pulling up to pump. Lucky boy.

Sorry to hear about your problems Joe, Hopefully they can take a new drive off a bike in the showroom if they do not stock one. I hope this is not going to be a trend with drive failures on the GT. Just so you know, I am in your home state of Ohio for the week on business and I am treating the waitresses extra special for ya.

Sigh, well on the plus side Joe you're 10 minutes away from the Sierra Nevada Mtn's and some beautiful riding. Most of the dealerships in the are do rentals so you couldn't ask for a much better place to break down.

Well...what's an adventure without a little crap thrown in for good measure? Keeps a man humble ya know.

I'll knock on Sierra's door first thing in the morning and we'll go from there. I'm hoping to back on the road SOON.

That sucks Joe! We had our own misadventure on the way home from Cambria today... a 6 hour drive turned into over 10 hours... but I was able to zip-tie a few things together and make it home the rest of the way.

Was great to meet you and I hope you're able to get on the road again soon.

A Quick update - They tried to install a 07 rear drive off a bike on the floor but the ABS sensor was different (brake system changed). They had an 06 GT on the floor with 4k miles and gave joe the option of taking that one or waiting for an overnighted rear drive to come in tomorrow. He took the one that's on site (bird in the hand rings true) and should be on the road shortly. He plans to hit the road once repairs are completed and cover as much ground as he can today.

And yes, the dealer flushed and renewed the fluid in the 4k old rear drive.

That's good news, but I am surprised that a dealer would offer him a used part on a warranty repair. Not that that's a bad thing...I'm just surprised.

Garage
It was either wait for a new drive to be shipped to the dealer, or take the used one and get on his way. Joe chose to get fixed and get moving. After all, the part they took off his bike was used.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Yes, we're OK... thanks for asking! One of the fuel line quick disconnects on the R1150R started spewing fuel & so we stopped at Santa Cruz BMW to fix it. Unfortunately their service department wasn't open and they didn't have any replacement parts, so the repair took a bit longer than we had hoped...

At least everybody is OK. I've heard about a bunch of those quick disconnects breaking lately. One more thing to add to the regular replacement list I guess...

Mine broke ('04 GS) while at Raffy's for a work party one day while I was trying to disconnect it. No fun... but Raffy saved the day by having some in stock, of course!

Good post Ken. Home was calling, and that was top priority at the moment. In hindsight, I don't regret the decision. In fact, now I have a rear drive that's been flushed twice in 4K miles.

Maybe this is something you should do whenever you replace a rear tire!

I don't question your decision at all. I would have made the same one. I am just surprised that the dealer even offered you the choice. Especially on a warranty repair. It opens them up to questions like is the used part covered under the same warranty as a new one? What is their liability if the used part were to fail and you were injured? etc.
