I was leaning towards November 11-12 for a number of reasons myself.
Yes, Nov 10-12 is technically Veterans Day three day weekend but certainly not a major one for those involved in meaningful commerce. Without snow, SLT will continue to be much less crowded and we have no plans to ride after dark.
Rally point suggestion is to meet at Bonanza Grill in Jackson, CA about 1130 for lunch and then head over Hwy 88 from there.
To answer a PM, rates are at their seasonable low just before Thanksgiving. The Days Inn rates run $44 - $85 per night depending on room size and configuration. It is rated 2.5 stars on Expedia and 2 stars in AAA. They have a large outdoor whirlpool. And again, within clear walking distance to two interesting restaurants. It is also within a few blocks of the Stateline Casinos and the Heavenly Gondola.
To answer another PM, I am not opposed to staying some place more upscale that might have in room jaccuzzis and fireplace options. However, the rates tend to be much higher, even in the off season, and very few have quality restaurants within walking distance. We can expect temps to be in the low to mid 30s after the sun goes down around 4:30pm.
There are many ways to return to our home bases depending on where that might be. Yes, a group may be interested in riding over to Virginia City, NV on Sunday morning. I also heard an idea about riding down Hwy 395 and coming across Tioga Pass through Yosemite which could work for those returning to areas of the East Bay.
One more thing. If the weather forecast turns marginal or worse, the ride would be cancelled. It's simply the safe thing to do. If the weather stays nice, we'll raise a toast to those that balked and stayed home.
Six couples so far. What say you? Shall we dance?
