Current good eats in the Bay Area

Greetings from the Texas Hill Country.

Deborah and I will be in and out of SF Thursday pm through noon Saturday. She's got a job gig and I'm playing chaparone. It's a quick trip so we're looking for some places close to SF proper to have some good food without breaking the bank (read: no expense account). I'll have a car, lived in Marin for several years in the late 70s/early 80s so I know my way around pretty well.

I used to enjoy Pacific Cafe in Kent and Scomas at any of their locations. Spengers in Berkeley for fried food, and so forth but I don't know if these even exist any more.

Thanks guys. No pressure if the thinktanks are dry. I'll eat no matter what and enjoy it.

Stay away from Spangers...they used to be good but since they sold a few years back never the same. In Marin you have Poggio which is in Sausalito great food and place and great town to walk around in. Boulevard in the city (SF) is very nice great walking around the piers but a bit pricey but worth it. hope this helps a bit.

Pompei's Grotto on Fisherman's Wharf near pier 47 is good. They make some of the best chowder in town IMHO. If you want to take a little drive down the coast there's the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company and Mezza Luna in Princeton by the Sea, just north of Half Moon Bay. The Beach Chalet overlooking Ocean Beach in SF at the west end of Golden Gate Park is pretty good as well.

Thanks Ted. Scomas was only in Marin when I knew them. Matter of fact I'm a pre-quake kinda guy so pier 47 wasn't even builtout.

I used to enjoy Paprikas Fono (sp?) (Hungarian food) on the third/fourth floor of Ghirardelli Square. They had a platter of meats that kept me happy the rest of the week.

Hang in their Ted. Sorry to bring it up in this food post but those pics you posted were awesome. Glad you're fit to post and pout about them.

Thanks for the reply. I hate it when life changes and good things get bad.

BTW, are cigars smokeable anyplace in CA? I'll have too little time to find a bike and too much to only drink coffee or eat. I've got to find a place to exploit my recreational vices.

Thanks David. What's hoppy and heavy at Half Moon Bay? You've set me on a whole different way of thinking about spare time. You working on Friday?

Unfortunately, yes, I have to work this Friday. If you go to HMB what time do you think you might get there? If it's later I may be able to sneak up there.

HMB Brewing makes a number of tasty beers, but the Amber and stout are my two favorites. Here's a link to their beer list.

You're not the first person that's said something like that to me. My wife thinks I may be missing out on something, but we'll never know for sure.

If I get down there it will probably be earlier in the afternoon so traffic isn't much of a headache. If you want to pm me with a contact number I'll let you know if it looks likely.

Thanks for the link. It does look like a place I'd enjoy.
