Washington Tech Session

What: Slave Cylinder Tech Session
When: Saturday, April 29th 9 a.m. to around 4 p.m.
Where: 12829 SE 234th Street, Kent, WA 98031
Contact: Terry, 253-630-7318, after 6 p.m.
Contact: Ken, 805-302-9122 cell

1. Terry (hosting)
2. Ken (coming to wrench)
3. Coni (slave cylinder)

This Tech Session will focus on changing out the clutch slave cylinder and drilling the weep hole. We have a 3-car garage available, so we could probably do up to 4 bikes, especially if I can get a couple of willing assistants. If on the other hand you would just like to come and observe and/or kick tires that's fine as well.

There will be coffee available, and we can do pizza or something easy for lunch. Unless someone wants to organize use of Terry's Weber grill for burgers, etc.?

If someone has a digital video camera and wants to play film-maker, that would be useful as well.

We will have the specialty tools available, but anyone who can bring basic LT tools would be welcome (metric socket set, metric allen wrenches, T-25 torx wrenches, torque wrenches, maybe even an electric screwdriver). Also, if someone has a vacuum bleeder that would be helpful.

Please add your name to the list above so we know how many are coming and who would like to have this service done. We'll try to accommodate as many as reasonably possible. However, we should try and give priority to bikes with higher mileages.

Here is the list of parts needed and approximate prices:

Mandatory Parts:

Felt Ring 23 21 1 230 440 $2.70

Optional Parts:
Push Rod 21 52 7 659 112 $36.00

The optional part depends on the year of your bike. My '02 had the updated Push Rod with the groove for the Felt Ring, but older bikes may not. Keep in mind there is a BMW dealer close by, so we can get the new Push Rod if someone needs it (plus I have 1 spare with me), but I'd recommend replacing the Felt Ring either way.

tech session

I would love to come but am going to be in CA that weekend. I don't need to do the weep hole yet, but would like to learn more about doing my own maintenance. I live up in Everett....are you having another session this year? Ride West wants $750 for the 12K....seems like it would be well worth it to learn to do most of the repairs myself.

Just got home from my journey to the southwest. Back a day late and lots of dollars short. The good news is that the green chili's made it home still frozen! They are a hot batch too...
Ken, I could come to watch, assist, or if we need a bike to show how to do a rear end bearing. I was getting a lot of chips and filings when changing the oil. The dealer "looked" at it about 15k ago and claimed it was fine. Or is this something better for the shop to do? I have about 35k on the bike now.
Tony, sorry you can't make it. I'm sure we can find a time and place to show you how to do a 12K. Most of it is pretty easy once youve done it.

Talking Wash tech session.

What does this service entail. What has to be pulled and how long will it take? I have 68K on my 2000 LT and would love to tear into the bike for this service. I currently have the lower fairing off the bike in an attempt to locate an oil leak. If I have not isolated it by then, I would love to replace some seals while we are in there!

If I remember correctly It takes a good 4 or 5 hours. Faster as we do more and the learning curve improves. Ken knows the bike REALLY WELL and is very helpful with any problem we may encounter. I hope the Oregon guys come up with Ken because they are also very knowledgeable and helpful as well.

When we did mine, it was about 4 hours. The more help you have, the longer it takes. But the idea is to let people observe, and learn. We can probably do several bikes if we have some folks willing help wrench. I'm sure I can convince a few Oregon folks to come up.

We don't have to pull any fairings, but we do remove the rear wheel, final drive, and swing arm. I doubt we'll have time to do a full 12K service this time, but maybe we can schedule another tech session later.

Oh, and I've got a spare room sorted. Thanks for the offer though.

I sure would like to meet and watch you in action but I have other committments on the 29th. It would be a nice ride from here on the East Side of the State.

I have met 2 other LT folks here and we hope to plan a " East Side Tech Day" one of these days in the future !

Put me on the list. Not sure I'll do anything to the bike but I'll bring some tools and a vacuum bleeder. I'm thinking about doing the brake flush in the near future so I will be asking some questions if you've done it. See you on the 29th.

If I don't have to work I will be coming but unfortunately I won't know until the last minute. I am starting a test and will be pulling 7x12s until it is over. The end date is supposedly the 28th but I have been on too many of these to believe it . The schedule has already slid almost two weeks and I not convinced it won't slide a little more.

So if a miracle occurs and I can attend, I have an electric screw driver and the basic tools like wrenches, socket sets, driver bits, screw drivers, allen wrenches and the like. I have both a foot pound and an inch pound torque wrench and the ever handy torque tables. I have a Mityvac brake bleeder. I do not have an impact wrench or a large breaker bar. I also wouldn't want to subject the punishment needed to get the swingarm off on a ratchet handle, at least not on one of my ratchet handles even if they are Craftsman .

I do have digital cameras (Nikon D70 and a compact) and I can ramrod a BBQ pretty well too if that is what is needed.

If a miracle doesn't occur I will regret missing out on a gathering of NW LT riders. Fortunately I had the pleasure of riding down with Brian and meeting up with Ken and some of the Portland bunch at the last NW Tech session.

I was all set to post that I had to back out, work is really nuts, I'll be stuck at my customer site all weekend, then I realized this tech session is next weekend. Whew. So that all still looks good, unless they suddenly send me to Korea for a week (it's gonna happen, just not sure when yet). So far though, we're still on schedule for this one and the Spokane one.

I'll touch base again early next week and make sure that we'll have everything we need together. Stay tuned.

What else do we need I have wide varity of tools even a torque wrench if needed? How about food or drink or any thing else?

We have many options right? We could order some pizza, have everyone bring an hors d'oeuvre or all of us just meet before for a bite or go for a ride after and grab a bite to eat. What does everyone want to do? Since this is my first tech sessions I don't know the correct protocol. What normally goes on? What do you guys feel like?

Those sure are loaded questions. Actually, I feel like . . . riding. But since we have the garage all set up, I guess we'll wrench instead.

I have the special socket and allen wrench. I'll pick up a 6" long 1/8" drill bit. I assume others will have standard torque wrenches, a 12mm allen socket, a drill (preferably a 90 degree drill for tight spaces), and other standard hand tools. Also, a heat gun will be useful for breaking the loctite on certain areas, and a vacuum brake bleeder.

I have the drill bit if you haven't already found one, I can also bring the 90 degree drill,and heat gun. Just let me know which or all. I am also fine with chipping in for pizza, But if we decide on grilling something let me know so I can bring some Hatch NM green chili.

Made it home just fine, The temp showed down to 38 degrees. I thought it felt cool. Thanks to all for a good time, And Terry for putting us up for the day.Great shop you have Terry. The rear bearing went well and ended up being quite easy. It was nice to meet you all. And of course a big thanks to Ken for coming up to our little corner of the world and giving his guidance once again.

What a great day!!! It was really nice meeting all of you and I want to thank you Terry and your spouse for sharing your home for a learning center. Ken thanks for all the info and I hope we can do this again. It rained like hell on the way home and it was actually snowing when I got home. More like slushy rain but it was a little chilly. Hope to see you all on the road sometime.

Great day, had fun and met great people. Thanks to all for the learning and hospitality.
Boy did I get wet! My pants leaked like crazy! I stopped at the GI Joes in Puyallup and bought some lovely bright yellow rain pants for $15. Turned up the seat heater and poached myself all the way home. Things cleared up south of Tacoma and the sun came out, go figure

Just got in myself. After hearing others' reports, I'm glad I waited until today to head back down. Temp was 40s-60s and dry, and I managed to get back to Hillsboro without any interstates. I definitely need to do some more exploring in that area.

And thanks to Terry for hosting, Ruth for putting up with all of us, Bill for his valuable help, and everyone else for participating. It was a good weekend.

Wow ,

What a great learning session and a chance to meet new friends. Huge thanks to Terry and Ruth for allowing us to share there home. Ken and Bill both you guys should be working for BMW , what great work .
