Exclamation K1200LT tech session in Beaverton

I will be hosting a tech session in Beaverton, OR on Saturday, Sept. 10 starting at 9:00 am. I will have Ernie and John at my home showing how to replace / upgrade the throttle cables on a 2003 K1200LT. My plan is to have the tupperware off before the session to speed things up, however, if we will have newbys there that have not done it, I could wait. I have ordered the parts. Libations will be provided but if you have a favorite, feel free to bring your own. I could have it on Sunday but since there may be a possibility that a part may be necessary, I believe Saturday would be the best choice. I could clear out a large 4 car garage so there is room for others if they want to do or show something. I will be using my lift. If you plan on attending, please let me know so I can have a tally of how many are coming.

A special thanks to Ernie and John for volunteering to help out with instructions!

Larry, I would love to attend but unfortunately(?) I will be in my boat on Nehalem Bay slaying the wily Metacarcinus magister, fka Cancer magister, aka dungeness crab.

Somebody has to do it! Being the good buddy I am I will have a crab sandwich or 2 for you!

Make that an affirmative from myself also Larry. So if it is a small turnout that just means more goodies for Ernie, you & I!

Re: K1200LT tech session in Beaverton

We are still on for Saturday and this is an excellent opportunity for people to see under the "hood" of the K1200LT. Throttle cables do wear out and the job isn't that difficult if you take the time to do it and not rush it. See you on Saturday!

I did mention this to a couple of folks from our neck of the woods who were at CCR, so we may have some drop by. Certainly hope so!

Re: K1200LT tech session in Beaverton

Welcome back guys!
I was wondering what sort of goodies you prefer! I will provide what is needed or simply wanted. We could do Pizza for lunch or Subs. I do have some freshly made Traeger TriTip jerky! Beer or soda or ice tea? It still looks as though it will be only three of us. I would have thought more would be interested. Maybe this should be cross posted for the main forum.
The bike is on the lift with the side tupperware off. I have already replaced the oil & filter, Trans fluid, diff fluid, intaslled HID low beam lighting, R&R O2 sensor and installed new spark plugs. Does the left side airbox need to come off?

See you guys at 9:00 Sat.

You pick the snacks and I'll stick with soda or tea, thanks. We can do this job with the side panels (tupperware) off and the stingray loose if not removed already. Did you change the fuel filter? If not, do you want to? We can show ya. Is the tank on or off? It is much easier with the tank removed to do the cables, but do-able with it on. See you on Sat morning!

I do not want to put you to too much trouble! really!

I have the side tupperware off but have never removed the stingray or tank! I should probably replace the fuel filter and air filter but do not feel good taking up so much our your time. You are already too generous!

I do already have an air filter but do not have the things to do the fuel filter. let me know what you want to show me and what I need to purchase for the work. Its easy to see why you received the award!

Thanks again

Talking Re: K1200LT tech session in Beaverton

Trust us Larry, it won't take that much more of Ernie's time to remove the Stingray and Tank! (or mine!)

It is sometimes a pain getting everything lined up when re-assemblying it all, but that is what us "Supervisors" are there for. If the Tank has much fuel left in it wd will want to be careful how we lay it out, especially in the hot weather, because it can become a little harder to line up all the bolts if it decides to widen, or stretch a little. But still not a problem as long as we are aware of it.

We shall see you Saturday!

John

We should replace the fuel filter if it has been in there awhile and the cable job really requires taking the fuel tank off anyway; it's just easire to do that way. I'll bring a couple tools along to enable the fuel filter R&R for you in case you pick one up. Really this is no trouble at all Larry. You are going to love what you are about to learn. I'll bring my lap-top and camera along too. do you have wireless internet?

Yes, I have wireless. I will go ahead and pick up a fuel filter. I do not think there is much gas in her.

Larry, PM me you address please. I will try to make it as I plan on the filter change this winter among other things. The only wrinkle is I may be on a ride. If that does not come together, I will do my best to make out your way.

Oh never mind, saw your address in the original post

Thumbs up Re: K1200LT tech session in Beaverton

tech session is over! What great people ! Ernie, John and Brian came by today plus another couple whom their name eludes me. The main work was over by about noon and I took Ernie & John to lunch to thank them for all their help!

Todays project:
New fuel filter
new air filter
new fuel injector inlet line
new fuel line quick disconnects
new throttle cables

previous:
new oil & filter
new trans fluid
new diff fluid
new spark plugs
new O2 sensor
HID low beam upgrade
Fix broken mirror at the metal clip

It is all back together but I have four tupperware screws left over and will look for where they go next time she is apart. Time for a ride!

Thanks again Ernie and John!!!

You are very welcome Larry! And Tks for that burger & brew at the conclusion of all Ernie's hard work! The passers by were Rand (aka "Rhawk") & Susan Hawksworth by the way.

On a serious note, it is always a good feeling whenever we can help someone else out, so the pleasure is ours.

Re: K1200LT tech session in Beaverton

Thank you Larry for the hospitality and the opportunity to help you. You are a pretty good wrench and with a little patience I can see you putting on a few more tech sessions. Like John said: it is always a good feeling to help someone with their bike, and it is kind of a "pay it forward" thing too. Keep it in mind the next time you hear of someone in need of a helping hand.

I think John is giving me way too much credit though. I think he had a lot more of a hand in the work than I did.

Here is Larry putting his wonderful machine back together: Good job Larry!

Here is john giving me the $tink-eye when we were preparing to route the cables and install the new throttle bits. Ever the QC guy and a wonderful supervisor.

Hey there Larry !
I'm curious why you changed the O2 sensor.
Was it giving you trouble ? Or just a preventative ?

Rand
While on the return from the rally in Pa, my gas mileage went from 50+ to 30+ and I noticed some black soot. It also stumbled sometimes on "gentle" acceleration as with the cruise control. I spent the morning at Sturgis BMW and they checked for codes. They "told" me that the codes showed the 02 sensor was toast. They we willing to replace it and install new throttle cables for the tune of $1400. I decided to ride her home and pay for the extra gas. I haven't taken her off the lift yet to check it out but I assume it is now fixed.

Re: K1200LT tech session in Beaverton

That's just the way it's supposed to work. You notice a problem, diagnose it,
and it gets fixed............... All without being stranded somewhere.
It sounds to me like a "bullseye".
BTW thanks for the tech "sesh". I believe I'll be ordering some quick disconnects for the fuel tank as a result.
