Sad news

I guy I worked with for the last 20 years was killed in a motorcycle accident yesterday. He was feeling ill first thing in the morning. I do not want to armchair investigate But I wouldn't be surprised that he was suffering from dehydration from riding a couple days in the hot/ dry climate of eastern WA. The temps are up around the country now so please be aware of your hydration. You can do some silly things and even black out from it. Drinking bottle water is not enough. there are no minerals or electrolights in that sterilized water. So altenate between it and a sport drink. Here is the link but beware its not a pretty one. Be careful....

Sad news, indeed. Condolences to his family & friends.

And thanks for the reminder to hydrate, and to stay aware. As the weather warms up, I'm seeing a lot more casual bikers on the roads. But even us veteran riders need to remember not to take things for granted.

I just logged on after working all night. What sad news indeed. The statistics as mounting up as you know I had a similar loss a month ago; and you are spot-on with your caution to hydrate. We will be keeping your friends family and you in our thoughts and prayers.

Unhappy

Brian, just saw this post. Really sorry to see it, but the best we can do is to be aware of the possible risks out there. And dehydration is most certainly a big one! Appreciate that you took the effort to remind us all. Our prayers are with his family and friends like yourself.

Brian,
Our sincerest condolences for the loss of your friend. The dehydration thing is very real. Judy was out in the sun alot Monday and was drinking water the whole time, but she started getting a headache and feeling just not right. By the time we got home, she was literally out of it . Just kind of lost in her own space and could not function coherently. It took about an hour and glasses of Gatorade to get her back.
As someone stated previously, in the hot weather we need to be taking in electrolytes (like Gatorade) in addition to just water. The combination of sun, heat, and wind on our bodies dehydrates very quickly.
Our prayers to your friend's spouse and family.
Jeff

My condolences on your (and the families) loss. Definitely one of the more unusual motorcycle crash scenarios.

Thanks to all for the kind words, Its a shame to be so close to retirement and then have this happen. He would ride his bike to work every day rain or shine. sometimes even in the snow! Luckily his kids are grown. I hope his wife is covered financially. Unfortunately most pensions are diminished for survivors. Live for today....

Brian,

Sorry to hear about your friend and co-worker. It's a wake-up call for us all. Thank you for sharing this.

Twice in my life I have been seriously dehydrated. Both times, I felt sick to my stomach like I needed to barf, and felt disoriented, a little dizzy, and tired.

Any time I start to feel remotely like this, the first thing I do is drink as much water as I can get down.

I had some friends who tried to ride from Seattle to Las Vegas in one pass. They figured if they didn't drink much along the way, they wouldn't need to make too many potty stops. They made it, but spent two days in the hospital when they got there.

For those of us who live on the the wet side, we don't appreciate how dry the desert side really is.

If you look at the map and don't care where you are, you're not lost.
