NW Tire Thread

So we don't jump on someone else's thread perhaps we can have some open forum threads for the NW folks. Here is one for general tire discussions:

Art,

What kind of front tire are you using now and what do you want to change to next. I'm wanting to try the Avon. I need to get a part number for it and get it here ASAP. I have just enough rubber for this weekend and then I'm changing this one out.

Hello Ernie,
From a previous NW thread I found this as the part number for the Avon front. SWMOTO tire is #305562 I think its about time you switched over to it! Enjoy the weekend if your not working.

Thanks for the part number. I'll order it today. I still have some run-out tires but would like to try the Avon. We are both on vacation this week. Getting some home projects done, then play! We have a ride south planned for the weekend though.

Funny that you mention tires

I checked the air in my tires late last night and found that the front Bridgestone was worn much further than I had thought. (this time I put my glasses on). I thought that I'd push it for our ride this weekend and then got to thinking and worrying about have problems and causing problems for the group.

So, by about 3:45 this morning I got tired of worrying about it and got up and put a new Bridgestone on. I still have a Avon front and another Bridgestone rear (Ken and John also have rear tires). I will be using the Avon next. Not sure what we will be switching to if the Bridgestone rears are actually NOT going to be available any longer.

Mine are on their last legs too. New set ordered and will be here Monday. I've asked for Monday off for a discretionary day. I hope to put the new set on then. Perhaps Ken will have met his deadline and will want to join me while I scrub them in.

so far I am liking the avon

Brian you are right..
On another note, I was suprised to see they do not mark their heavy spot on the tire.
Aso I can see why this tire will not cup as bad as the bt020's. Pretty smart tread pattern.

I want to thank my NWet riding friends for suggesting the switch to the Avon front tire. Excellent choice of tire of my LT. The tire sticks much better than the Metzler bias (duh) and the BT020 bias tires that I've been using for the past 4+ years I've owned this wonderful machine. The tire sent to me is the new Storm that is getting excellent reviews.

The only comparible tire I've used was the Metzler radial that PM mistakenly mounted three years ago and I subsequently used up the tread in 4k miles (it stuck like glue for 3.75k of those miles though ) We'll see what the mileage portion will be in the next few months as I try to wear this out before putting on fresh rubber for our trip to CCR.

Ken and my friend Rob were over last Friday evening and helped me mount the new set. I chose to try the 020 Radial in the rear (that's right Joe. The tire you loved to hate for separation anxiety but you don't have to concern yourself with such trivial matters any longer ). The next morning a sleepy trio set out for the RTE in eastern Oregon. Even brand new on wet pavement the new tires felt comfortable. Nothing squirley like I've experienced with the ME880's. The stick in the sharp turns is refreshing without the push and chatter of either of my previous front tire brands (40# pressure two-up). The 020 radial in the rear (46# pressure two-up) was stable as well with that comfortable feeling of transition going into maximum lean (for me that is when I drag whatever wants to touch from the lower fairing and pegs down ). Nice.

Overall I'm satisfied with the switch. The cost is $4 more for the Storm over the 020 at SW Moto and delivered to your door in two days here in the NWet area. Not bad service and value for the dollar in my opinion.

NW Tire Tread

A question on the Avon's. Based on the above comments, it appears they are radial tires. My question: Are they load rated for an LT, 2 up with gear?

Yes....the Avon Storms are both weight rated for the LT. I have a set in my shop waiting to be put on, but it will be a couple months. My brother put a set of Storms on his ST1100. They replaced the 45/46 Avons. He said that he didn't have the squirley feel with the rear Storm that he had on the 46 when he first installed it. He loves the handling so far.

I am not a Bridgestone fan. I would love to have a nice riding, long lasting, quiet, set of tires that I don't have to worry about delaminating. Hopefully these will fill the bill for me.

HTH,

Ron

Yes and Yes. I'm hoping for both excellent handling and wear out of this set. Time will tell.

Thumbs up

I have a set of the Avon Storms waiting at home to go on my GT. I have gotten around 7-8000 miles from both the Metzler Z6's and the Michelin Pilot Roads.
With the handling accolades that I keep reading, I am hoping that the Storms will at least do as well mileage wise.

I couldn't help it and had to take the long way into work today. I have 700 on the tires and couldn't be happier (at least until I try the next best tire on the market). I'm not holding back on the throttle either. I want to see what these babies will do. I want to see if they will hold up to my CC in July. I would hate to have to stop for anything other than a drink.
